I'm Thankful for My 12 yo Dog that I Lost Last Night
Since Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time to express all that we are thankful for, then it is most appropriate to express my gratitude for having had such a loving and faithful companion for almost 12 years, Sam. I'm so thankful to God that he gave me such a wonderful dog. He came into my life when I needed something to help me get back into the world after I had been ill for several years. He was there in my down times and gave me the unconditional love and support that I needed. He also gave my husband the seal of his approval. Out of all the men I had dated, Jeremy was the only one Sam took an immediate liking too. He accepted my husband into our pack as if he were there from the beginning. I always felt protected when my bubby was around. He would come into the bathroom with me and lay with his butt towards the shower making sure no one came in to bother me. When I was teaching at night, he would come with me and sit in the truck and wait patiently for me, barking at anyone that came to close to the truck or to me. Who needed an alarm system when I had my own "Bark Alarm"?! He has been the closest thing to a child I have ever had and I will miss him till the day I die. I could go on and on extolling his virtues and his memory, but I would like to finish this with a prose regarding dogs:
Where to bury a dog....
There are various places in which a dog may be buried. We are thinking now of a Setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This Setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry tree strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub, is an excellent place to bury a good dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder. These are the good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter. For if the dog be well-remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where the dog sleeps. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked, and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land where most exhilarating cattle graze. It is all one to you, and nothing is gained and nothing lost---if memory lives. But there is one best place to bury a dog.
If you will bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call---come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel, they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing. The one best place to bury a dog is in the heart of his master.

I am soooo sorry for your loss of such a wonderful companion my heart goes out to you at this difficult time.
I know i will be soooo lost to when my dogs times are up
You touched my heart soo very dearly and i hope that your time of pain remains also one of thankfullness
I just wanted to thank all of you for your support and sympathy. It helps a lot to hear of other's losses and how they understand the pain I am going through. When the pain gets really hard to bear I just keep thinking of all the good memories and just keeping thanking God for letting me have him for so long. Thank you all again!
I really feel for you. I had dogs all my life, up until my last divorce when my ex got "custody", but I still had visitation rights and even paid maintenance for them!!! So you can see I am a bit of a dog nut! They do help you through the worst of times and enjoy the best of times with you. Losing one is the most difficult thing to bear at times.
I hope you will find the same love and companionship with your next four legged baby! It is a wonderful feeling.
My heart goes out to you for your loss.
