My Mood: Points: 826.70 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 826.70 | I'm usually positive however.... I'm 33, I have no children although I was hoping to have some one day.... about a month ago I was diagnosed with PCOS and I have been scrambling to get myself together ever since. Im about 40-50 lbs overweight. My doctor didn't give me any information except for a hard to read list of foods i can and can't have, she told me my cholesterol numbers were in reverse and and then told me to research PCOS on the internet... wow how helpful she was.... this is what brings me here... I have started working out everyday for 45 minutes, I do about 30 minutes of cardio(10 of which are running) and about 15-20 minutes of weights... is that enough to lose weight?
Also I know that after a cardio workout you are supposed to have carbs but with my PCOS should I still do that???
I feel like this diagnoses is a blessing because i've wanted to lose weight for a long time and now im kind of forced to....but at the same time in the back of mind my i'm ready to ball my eyes out and i'm really trying to keep it together. I have a chin full of hair that i shave everyday and it makes me feel so bad about myself.
I went to the drugstore and bought Saw Palmetto, cinnamon extract, ginko biloba, multi vitamins, asprin, milk thistle, evening primrose oil.... geez i don't even know if i really need it all im just trying to do everything that i read about.
Any advise would be appreciated. |

Any advise would be appreciated. | I wish I could offer some advice to make you feel better, but I am also newly diagnosed and still trying to soak up as much information as I can. It's a blessing in disguise, because at least you know whats wrong and why you have the symptoms you do, but there isn't a lot out there to treat it! Wow, your doctor doesn't sound very supportive at all! My doctor sat talking to me and Brandon (my fiance) about my diagnosis with concern and care for like 30 minutes, even though he had patients waiting. I would say, find a new doctor to begin with! I think 45 minutes of exercise is a great start! It's more than I do, and I believe that if you're watching what you eat and working out that long, you're sure to lose weight! Best of luck to you, once you get your post count up (dumb post requirements!!) PM me if you ever want to talk.

If you continue to work out, you need to fuel your body properly in order to keep it working at peak efficiency (not eating enough causes your body to think you are starving and therefore it stores fat). I know that I personally am sensitive to carbs in my diet, but I've been trying to remove the complex carbs (specifically things with high fructose corn syrup!!) from my diet while keeping whole grains and such.

Points: 0 Bank: 0 Total Points: 0 | Yeah it sounds like your doing well with the exercise, maybe just to increase it every so often, or your body will get used to what your doing, and be sure to mix up your routine, doing different things and such. Good luck with your weightloss!
The wanting to cry at the drop of a hat does come and go, somedays i dont wanna even get out of bed, but we persevere (sp?) But keep your chin up and know that there are so many cysters here going through what you are and are willing to help

My Mood: Points: 1,974.45 Bank: 4,564.78 Total Points: 6,539.23 | God bless you. I'm on the same road... I was diagnosed a few years ago by my gynecologist kind of as an afterthought, and his only advice was to get on birth control pills. I,too, have a chin full of hair that makes me feel like some sort of mutant, and I'm newly married and so excited about trying to get pregnant and I can only imagine the difficulties and heartaches that may bring... it's not fair.
Thank God there is a place like this, though -- I just found this forum a few weeks ago, and I already feel like I am not alone anymore. We're all in the same boat together. We just need to keep our chins up (hairy as they may be!) and do the best we can.
PS - Good for you with the exercise, too. More than I do!

My Mood: Points: 1,259.08 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,259.08 | The general rule of thumb is to have about 45 g. (or 3 carb units) of carbs per meal. So, depending on when you work out, you may be eating some afterwards. Otherwise we should steer clear.
It is a lot to take in and a decision that you and your doctor should make about whether to go low-cal or low-carb. They are pretty different and can make a difference about how you structure your new life change (diet just sounds so horrible ). I am struggling with which way I want to go with my eating habits and will need to discuss it further with my doc soon. For now, I am trying to just cut back on my daily all around intake.
Good luck with your journey, hopefully it will be a good one. Keep us informed of how it is going and if you find any particularly good activity or meal.
