Well, I made the decision to stop the metformin. I was on 1500 mg for 4.5 months and nothing changed EXCEPT I felt horrible. I wasn't feeling bad before the metformin. I started because my fertility labs came back with high insulin BUT since I was having diarreaha (sp?) an average of 5 times a day for whole time the Dr. wouldn't retest me.
I went to 2 differenct Dr. and the last one told me not only did she not think it was working because I was still having 2 day periods but even if she did retest she wouldn't raise the dosage because I wasn't handling the 1500 a day. Keep in mind, I live overseas and don't have access to the XR. I am also not going to pay $70 a month when I have 100% coverage, that's just ridiculous.
I went out to brunch and was going to skip a day to see how I felt and not only did we end of staying out for 7 hours but I NEVER once had to RUN to the bathroom. It was also the first time in 4.5 months I had a regular bowel movement.
I am so happy it has worked for so many of you but like my Dr. said "some people just can't handle it".
When we move in a couple of months then I will talk to my new Dr. about maybe trying to XR but for now I feel SOOOO much better.
Good luck Mandy!
I too stopped Met for the same reasons. Even though I feel somewhat guilty about it, because it does work making me ovulate, the side effects are too extreme. I felt imprisoned by it.
The only thing is, it's hard to find information on other medications here. The "other med's" forum is pretty scant. (sigh)
I'm curious to see what medication you and I end up on.
I know the other meds forum is pretty dead, but try doing searches on 'Actos' and 'Avandia'. They are the altenative insulin drugs that most Dr's perscribe. Do some searching on google and see what information you can determine.
Hope it helps!

I thought I was the only one that couldn't handle it! I too feel guilty about stopping it but I feel great being off of it. I did just find out that I can get the XR mail order thru my health insurance. I just need my Dr. to back me up and order it....I will try it and see if it's any better.
I can't believe how nice it is not to run to the bathroom all the time...little pleasures...lol
Good luck,
I will let you know if the XR works for me if and when I get it. Have you tried the XR?
Good luck with the XR. It seems we don't have it in Canada? I had a friend who asked for it and couldn't get it.
I know what you mean about not having to run to the bathroom. The worst for me was having to take the dogs for their walk. I've had times I couldn't make it around the block, it would hit so fast.
You don't even realise how much it's taken over your life until your off. I'm so jealous of people who don't have side effects or they tapered off eventually. My body is so sensitive...and defective!!! Grrrr.
I'll let you know the outcome. I think I'll probably be seeing my doctor next week.
So sorry to hear that you weren't feeling well with the metformin...I do know that some do have terrible side effects on it, and no drug, no matter how helpful is worth feeling awful every day. I wish you good luck, and like Christy said, perhaps you may want to check into some of the other drugs out there, and see if one of them may suit you better. I wish you the best of health, and good luck in your search! If you do find one that works better, stop back in and let us know! There may be other cysters out there who are searching also...

I want to insert a plug for lifestyle changes that can help improve insulin levels.
Low carb dieting and plenty of exercise can really help you between now and your next medicine adventure.
I've heard that the other drugs do not cause the bad tummy trouble but aren't often recommended for those ttc, so it's something to work on with your doctor.
Best wishes,
Sheri
