I was told to go to an endicrinologist by a bunch of people and my friends mom who is a dr but in a different state spoke with an endicrinologist she knows and he told her to tell me to go to one and so i called to get an appt. and you can only get appt. by referral so i called my regular dr to get a referral and he refused! He said he already knows whats wrong with me so why would i need to go there!!!!!!!!! I'm kind of angry about that. So i have called the second dr that i went to for the 2nd opinion to see if he would refer me to them but i'm kind of at a loss. what do i do if i can't get a referral???????
Many ladies are treated by their GYNs, not an endo. If you would like to see an endo, insist your doc give you a referal. Endos are specialists for a reason!
So your family doc is treating your PCOS? My GP didn't know how to treat my PCOS. My GYN is wonderful. I didn't need any referal. I see him now once a year, but when I was first DXed I was being tested about every 3 months. GYNs and Endos are different usually in the way they treat and manage PCOS.
Well, just because your GP knows what is wrong with you, it doesn't mean that he knows the best Tx options.
What is his Tx plan? Has your doc's Tx plan given you the results that you want? He just might be knowledgable enough about PCOS to be able to treat you adequatley. I think they like to see if they can help treat your PCOS without you having to go to an endo. Then, if he is unable to get you the results that you want, he would refer you to an endo. Most docs like to refer only the toughest cases out, plus many insurances don't pay as well for specialists.
If you prefer to go to a gyno, you should be able to go to one without a referal.

Well he said I should take Metformin 1000 mg a day and get back on orthotricyclen and go on a liquid diet called optifast. That was the treatment he gave me. I don't know if that's satisfactory or not but I spoke with an endicrinologist in new york (my friends mom) and he said i should go and see one. I guess i should see a gyno then huh.
So he Rx'd Met to treat the PCOS/IR, the BCP's to get your cyces regular, and the liquid diet for weight loss?
Do you also want to get PG? or do you want to get the PCOS and weight under control first?

I want to get pregnant but in about 3 years. And yeah I want to get my weight under control first plus I know I will regret saying this but we are not ready for kids yet.
It's in the left hand column, and it's on Endos vs Gynos for PCOS. (good stuff)
The BEST doctor for PCOS is one who is well read on the diagnosis and treatment of pcos, and one who treats you based on YOUR symptoms and goals - not some 'standard' treatment. Bottom line.

It is totally ok to say that you are not ready for kids yet. It is good that you are starting to treat your PCOS NOW, so when you are ready to start having kids, then hopefully your body will be ready too.
Most cysters seek out an endo when they are ready to TTC, and Met hasn't worked for them, and they want to try clomid, injectables, or other fertility treatments.
Is your liquid diet just for 1 or 2 meals a day?
Personally, I am not a fan of liquid diets, or even pre-packaged meal diets. I used slim fast and lost about 25 lbs, but I never learned how to shop better, cook better, and serve correct portion sizes with that diet, so after I stopped the diet, I gained all the weight back and then some.
Does your doc also give cooking classes so you will be able to keep the weight off once you lose it? I have a friend who did weight loss surgery, and her doc gave all his patients cooking and nutrition classes. I was amazed when she told me that.
I hope you have great success with treating your PCOS, whether you decide to see a gyno, an endo, or stay with your GP.

3 meals a day you don't eat a bit of food for 3 months or so. I'm not sure about the cooking classes and stuff but this thing is called Optifast. have you heard of it?
I haven't heard of optifast before, but checked out their website.
They don't give the list of ingredients on their website, but it does show that 1 serving is only 160-200 Kcal. How many servings do you drink for a meal?
Is this something that you chose, out of all the weight loss options presented by your doc? Or was this the only option that he gave you?

I had heard of it but didn't know much. Based on glancing through some google returns, it looks like a doctor supervised VLCD (very low calorie diet) that is mainly liquid.
In some cases, it's used pre-bariatric surgery.
Tufts University uses Optifast, and they are EXTREMELY reputable, so that bodes well: http://www.obesityconsult.com/html/m...st_medical.htm
(I'm not necessarily 'recommending' it, but I do hold Tufts in VERY high regard)
You didn't mention how much excess weight you have, whether you have any weight related health issues, or whether your ovulate, or not.
There are several studies on women with PCOS and VLCD used to bring on menstruation. It wasn't weight loss that brought on AF...it was the low calories. If you want the links, I'll post them.
You might want to ask the specific reason for Rxing Optifast to get the full picture.
If you get a snotty response (like the one about a referral), ask for a new doctor all together. Any doctor should be VERY clear for why he/she is Rxing all elements within any course of treatment.

I tried to reply over the weekend but it wouldn't let me. The optifast was the only option I was given. I assume I ovulate I never had any problems till i got off my bcp 2 months ago now i'm a mess. I have about 110 extra lbs. and they said i am "knocking on the door to diabetes"
:Hugs cyster: You're going through a lot. If this doc isn't taking good care of you, I would vote for another opinion too! I have also heard in most cases you don't need a referral to see a GYN. In my case, I am treated by my family doc, because he was the one who took the time to diagnose my PCOS (I had seen an endo an more than one GYN who told me I was too fat. Other cysters have been helped more by a GYN or endo). I agree with Kat, the best doc for you is the one who knows your PCOS well and helps you to treat it. Sometimes it just takes a bit of "shopping around" to find that perfect doc for you. Hang in there cyster!
Hugs
