Default I need help

Hi everyone.
I really need some advice. I was diagnosed 8 years ago, given bcps, told to lose weight, and that was about it. My main problem right now is thinning hair on my head.
I noticed it a few months ago- my hair is much, much thinner (all over my head) than it ever was, and it falls out like crazy when I wash or brush it. I have to know what to do about this- and fast. It will probably be at least 6 weeks before I can see my primary care, get a referral, and get in to see an endo. I have to figure something out now.
Questions:
I have a son who is almost 2, I breastfed until 8 months ago, would breastfeeding postpone the "normal" postpartum hairshedding?
I had a mc in September (11 weeks)- could I be losing hair from that?
Does weight loss help?
What meds help this? I started Yaz and Spiro (a measly 20 mgs) a month ago.
Is Rogaine a prescription & should i get it?

I am so full of anxiety about this I don't even want to shower or brush my hair- it makes me sick to see all the hair falling out. I would appreciate any specific suggestions/info any one has. Thanks

After I had my miscarriage all my hair was falling out. Hands fulls at a time. It was very depressing. It should ease up with 6 months. I understand were you are coming from. You could always go see a dermotologist. That is what my doctor told me to do if it didn't resolve itself within 6 months. I got pregnant before that time period was up and now on pernatal vitamins and that seems to help also. Let me know how your doing.

Hugs

I had some hair fall out after my son's birth and it wasn't too bad, but this past yr it has been bad and this past month-it's the worse ever. I'm bummed about and the only thing the dr told me to do was to get rogain and nioxin shampoo.

I had that after my son's birth and at that time it wasn't a big deal , but this past yr it's been worse and the past 3 months really bad. I'm bummed about it and the dr only told me to use rogaine and nioxin shampoo. I wish I could stop it and get back the thickness.

The only that I can suggest it get a dht blocker and testosterone blocker, I use flutamide and dutas. I get it on the internet cause most doctors wont prescribe it. I have had some regrowth and the falling out has stopped other than the normal shedding.
P.S. do not try to get pregnant.......

My PCOS was not diagnosed until after a large weight loss. I suddenly began gaining weight-FAST. My main problem was elevated testosterone levels (119). Mine were only lowered with Medication. I started with Metformin(2,000mgs) and Spironolactone (200mgs) about three years ago. They helped all of my PCOS symptoms-except the hair loss. I now have a wonderful Endocrinologist who prescribed Flutamide. (250mgs) I have been taking it since June, at that time he lowered my Spiro to 50mgs. . The hair loss has STOPPED. I see a lot of regrowth. I am so happy. My doctor did liver labs every four weeks for the first five months, and now we will do them every three months. Flutamide works differently on the Testosterone, something about DHT. I just know that it is working for me. I know how devastaing hair loss can be. Don't let doctors tell you that weight loss alone will take care of the problem. Thin PCOS women also have hair loss and elevated testosterone levels. Have you had your levels checked? HTH

Hi Margy, I'm sorry to hear about your problem. Hair loss can be so devastating, especially in women. I went through that a couple of years ago and it drove me to tears several times. For me, the culprit was the birth control pills. A friend of mine who is a doctor told me they can have that effect on some women. I stopped taking the pill and my hair started growing back.

I know the pill can be a valuable tool for combating pcos, so I'm not necessarily suggesting you do the same thing I did. Hair loss can be caused by the excess free testosterone associated with pcos alone. I take 100 mg. of spironolactone 2x a day to battle the free testosterone, and it seems to help with many of my symptoms. I believe it is supposed to help with hair loss on your head and the excess hair growth on your face and body. I saw you take 20 mg., Maybe you could ask your doctor if raising your dosage of it would be helpful.

Try to keep your spirits up and talk to your doctor. If he/she can't give you the answers, then by all means get a second opinion. Keep us posted, ok? I really do wish you the best. : )
