Well, I have been losing my hair regularly for about just over a year or so...i noticed it was thinner, but it didnt start getting really bad until i came off the pill which was january 2008...and it just keeps getting worse..
I am on a very strict and healthy diet, i take supplements daily (ultrapreventative, iron, vit c, testoquench etc) protein shakes, etc...
I also have been using nisim which is a hair loss shampoo and lotion kinda thing...
I am also drinking spearmint tea daily...
I was losing about 150 hairs every time i showered and combed...i am now down to 60-80 ish...it depends..so yes it had slowed down...but i just want it to stop..and GROW BACK!
Also, how do you know if your hair follicles dead or alive? how do you know which type of hair loss you have...AGA, TE , or iron related? Doctor says its just iron related..but i mean, come on...i think it may be more than that...ive had my blood work done and again it comes back fine, and i get copies of my tests as well so i know my male hormones are in check..
Can it ever grown back? HOW!! What do i need to do to promote thicker stronger hair shafts?
According to my naturopath I am doing all the right things..but I am not seeing results! I am getting married in 6 months and i really want to feel comfortable with my hair..and not have to purchase a wig!
PLEASE HELP!

I'm sorry, I can completely understand as I started to loose my hair at 17. Have you seen a dermatologist? if your hormones are fine (sometimes even though they are normal you may be senstive dht) it may be another problem..
From what I've read B-complex vitamins can help, so can pre-natal vitamins, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, emu oil (applied topically), avacado (all block dht) which is what causes AGA. Diet is important too, you mentioned protien shakes? How many carbs/ sugar are in them? Try to get protien from lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts etc. instead.. Eat plenty of veggies and high fiber foods
Hi! Thanks for the reply! I just don't get it. I have seen my derm on several occassions and he just says its telogen effluvium and low iron..which i know can be a factor..but i have been taking iron and it has increased..so not sure there..
i have heard that even if levels are normal, you can be sensitive to them..but how do you control or stop that? and how does birth control stop the sensitivity?
my protein shake is really good so no problems there..and i am eating all those things..
my supplements include the b's and saw palmetto as well.

Have you had your hormone levels checked very recently -- including free testosterone levels and currrent estrogen levels?
I think one possibility is that you say you've just come off the pill. One of the things that BCP does to some women is that when their body detects the estrogen from the BCP it shuts down the body's natural production of estrogen. As long as they're on the pill, their hormone balance is OK. When they come off the pill, in theory the body will restart its own natural estrogen production; however in some women, especially those whose estrogen production has previously been low, the body doesn't restart production quickly, or doesn't increase it to the same level as before or, in some instances, doesn't restart it at all.
Even with normal testosterone levels, low estrogen levels can mean a testosterone-dominated hormone balance and consequent tendency towards hair growth and hair loss patterns more common in males.
If I were you, I'd start with getting some good checks on your hormone levels.
Hi there!
Thanks for the reply. And yes I agree about the whole coming off the pill thing, as many women have mentioned all the things that can happen. But I have been off now for 14 months. How long has it taken other women to regrow hair after coming off the pill? I get my hormones checked pretty regularly, as my doctor knows I want to keep a close watch on my health in regards to pcos. My estrogen and progesterone and all that stuff, including male hormones are fine. I am getting some more tests run again in a couple weeks. Im just really upset and frustrated and feel like I am losing hope. Everything else is going really well..my acne has cleared up, my weight is stabilized, my periods are about 35-38 day cycles which isnt too bad...so i just don't know..
With today's technology we have amazing treatments for disease and cancer and such, it just amazes me that for something like PCOS or hair loss we don't have much besides the pill or things like propecia and such.
Any more ideas? Ia it possible to get DHT tested through blood??

Make sure that the tests include your levels of free testosterone and that that's within the normal range.
It's a good sign that your acne's cleared up and that might tend to suggest that testosterone isn't the obvious culprit.
Sensitivity to testosterone can vary dramatically from one woman to another. As a rough indication, if your ring fingers are longer than your index fingers your skin is likely to have been sensitized to respond very readily to testosterone (it just so happens that sensitization to testosterone and the development of the relative length of fingers occurs at the same stage in early fetal life and looking at your fingers is as reliable a means of gauging skin sensitivity to testosterone as anything else is! :-))

Wow. I didnt know this. So what can be done if this is the case? is it treated the same as PCOS?

You can't change your sensitivity to testosterone, it's just a fact of life. Many women are sensitive to testosterone in the same sort of way that males are. However, if their testosterone levels are low, they show no obvious response to it. It's only when their testosterone levels rise or their estrogen levels drop that it begins to have effect.
The sensitization to testosterone takes place in the first three months of fetal life -- the same period when relative finger lengths are being determined. High levels of exposure to testosterone at that point in fetal life is shown by the relative lengths of index and ring fingers. Longer index fingers means normal female exposure, longer ring fingers means normal male exposure.
