ok so here's my situation. I went to the doctor's on may 14 because i was off my bcp since september and no period ( i went off because i wasn't getting a period and what my body to go back to normal) at that time me and my boyfriend of 5 years discussed the fact that it was a possiblity that i become pregnant and we agreed that it would be something we both want and though we are younger then most ppl we were both done school, have our own home and good jobs. so anyways doctor says i probably have PCOS and sends me to do blood work. Today i found out for sure i have PCOS and my insulin is higher then normal. Now i'm experiencing so many different emotions.
I mad becuase i don't feel that my doctor explained to condition well enough to me, i was under the impression that my horomones were all messed up and if i ever wanted to have a baby i would need help through medicine and he put me on the ring to help get a period. He never told be all the other health risk associated with PCOS.
and I'm sad. All i've ever wanted to be was a mother and now i find out that i might experience misscarriages and other problems with it, what if i'm never able to have a baby! and don't get me started on all the girls around me who have babies like its no big deal and the babies aren't even planned! and i feel like i can't really talk to my boyfriend about this because he would never truely understand the way i feel inside. also finding out about being pregnant will never be what i thought it would be. i always thought that i would think i was pregnant and take a test and it would be this big joyous event, now i fell like me becoming pregnant would be months of trying and taking meds and test and then worries of not carrying full term. Its not fair. not to say that if i became pregnant that i wouldn't be excited but that would always be in my mind.
i just really want to know would it be easier to have children when i'm younger (i'm 20) oppose to like 5 years from now. would i have greater chances of carrying full term? Like it could be years of taking meds before we become pregnant right?
First, take a big deep breath. You just found out you have a serious medical condition, and it will take some time to process. Yes, there is a lot to PCOS, including fertility probs, but not all women go through the same things. I ended up pregnant within a few months of stopping bcp, and had a perfectly healthy pregnancy and delivery. My boy is now almost 6. My cousin, not so lucky, had to do a few months of clomid to get her girl, and most likely wont get to have any more.
The biggest thing is start taking care of yourself. Schedule an appt. specifically to talk about your PCOS and what you need to be doing to maintain your health and fertility. Read the newbie posts in here. The cycsters who have been here a while are totally willing to help. Take care, and all the best to you.

Most women with PCOS are able to get pg and carry full term. PCOS is not curable, but is very treatable. I highly suggest starting your PCOS treatment now, rather than waiting until you are ttc. The best treatment is a low carb diet, exercise, and metformin (1500-2550mg per day). It might take a little more to get you pg than your friends who dont have PCOS. However, that doesn't really mean much in the end. It took me awhile to get pg with both my boys..but now that they are here..it doesn't matter. As for the misscarriage...many of us have never experienced that. Staying on the met. for the first trimester seems to lower the risks of m/c. Anyway...I also suggest talking to your boyfriend. Even though he can't understand..he can still help you get through this. It's important for your relationship to be open and honest. Good luck. Check out the newbie threads. They're very helpful. You are not alone.

Currently: 2000mg metformin
Not officially ttc, but not preventing!
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 9 years. ago I was about 19 so I was around your age. It scared the hell out of me too. I was scared I would never be able to have children and I would have all these problems to have to deal with. Throughout the last 9 years I began to cope with it and understand it more. I stayed on BCP until this last Dec. so the symptoms were pretty mellow. I wasn't getting my period either so I made an appt with a Dr. That appointment isn't until the 31st but while waiting for it I decided to try the natural route. I started acupuncture and only 4 appointments into it I started my period. I suggest you give it a try if you decide to go that route. I have learned more about PCOS in the last 4 months then I have since I was diagnosed. I bought a book off Amazon called "The New Glucose Revolution, Guide to Living Well with PCOS" and I have read a lot on this site. I feel very informed because these ladies have been through it all so they will be able to answer most if not all your questions and concerns. My personal thoughts are that you need to accept that you have this and move on and educate yourself. But give yourself sometime to adjust to this new journey. I am at the beginning of TTC also so if you have any questions just let me know.
Good luck!
