Today is my first day here and I am hoping that someone can help. I was told that I have PCOS back in 2000, I have been put on several different meds and really didn't see too many results. I don't have health insurance at this time and am really looking to see if there are any vitamins that might help me. I was put on birth control when I was 10 because of irregular periods and then when I stopped at 22 because I was married and wanted a family, I was hit with the big......YOU HAVE PCOS! It seemed like everything went down hill from there....I gained a TON of weight, became covered in hair, stopped having periods and when I would, they would last for months at a time. I am really just looking for some relief from this. I have tried to search the web for vitamins that might help, but I can't tell the difference between the sites that are just trying to sell me something or the ones that have real success stories! Can someone please help guide me? What do you do with no health insurance and finding yourself just getting worse?

Reason: title change
First I have to say BCP at 10? Holy Cow!!! That seems a little extreme.
Anyway, are you still trying to have a family? If not most county health departments can provide you with BCP. I don't know about specific vitamins to help with PCOS. My doctor told me to take pre-natal or diabetic vitamins. She also said to make sure that any vitamins you take have the USP symbol on them.

I know it was extreme, I guess Dr's didn't really know what else to do for little girls with messed up periods! I really believe it screwed me up even more! I would like a family, so PC is not really an option. I really thank you for your advice though. What are you taking now? Is it helping? I would love to hear your story.
I was diagnosed with PCOS in January of this year. I had never really heard of PCOS before. I went to the dr. for my yearly exam and she noticed that I had excess facial hair and I had been having irregular periods. I also have had a problem with acne and weight gain. She referred me to a gynocologist. I never really thought there was anything wrong with me. I just figured I was an unfortunate person who had messed up horomones. I also thought it was because I was (still am) fat. My period would come whenever it wanted usually about 3 months apart. It would be super heavy and I would have horrible cramps. There were times I had to go home from work because the cramps were so bad I couldn't do anything. I also would go through a Super Maxi in 2 hours (sorry TMI). This is really not an option when you teach kindergarteners. Anyway my gyno told me it was definately PCOS and she put me on Spironolactone and Yasmin. It has helped a lot. I don't have to shave my legs every other day and while I still use Nair, I now do it every other month instead of every other week. I really didn't know that this wasn't normal. Well, except for the period part. However, now that I don't experience these things, I am loving it.
Unfortunately if you are TTC neither Spriro nor Yasmin are options for you. I know that a lot of people have had success with Metformin, but I have no idea how much it costs.
I have a book called What to do when the Dr. Says it's PCOS by Milton Hammerly, M.D. and Cheryl Kimball. This is a really good book that I would recommend if you do not have it. I bought mine through amazon.com. There is a whole chapter on alternative therapies. It lists two sites: www.consumerlab.com and www.usp.org, for evaluating vitamin supplements and herbs. You might check these out. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. Feel free to e-mail me at b_sarahsue_17@hotmail.com In the first e-mail include something about Soul Cysters in the subject line so I make sure not to delete it.

I think generic metformin is on the $4 Walmart drug list. Anybody know? You gotta have liver tests with it periodically though.
Myself, I did the herb DCI (d-chiro-inositol) and got pg on it after only 3 cycles (and first 2 we weren't handling DH issues). But it's not $4 a month by a long shot.
I just wanted to say, too, you really want to try to get insurance if you're going to have a baby. So many things can go wrong and you want to get good treatment. And God forbid, if you end up with C/S, even an uncomplicated one can run the hospital bill up to 20 large. The NICU is about 10 large a day. You might look into your state's health assistance if you can't get regular insurance. I have just worked at innercity hospitals that serve the uninsured and the care they get is sad.

Yes, Met is on the $4 Wal-Mart medication list. That's how I will be able to get mine. I just got my prescription yesterday from the PA at the clinic on my college campus. Hope to go get it filled tomorrow (Wal-Mart is about 45 minutes away - yeah I'm in the sticks ). I'd like to get it sooner, but I have work all day today and then class from 6-9. Yuck!! Anyway, I am without insurance too since I went back to college, but luckily for me there is a very good physician assistant who will see students for free here. I was diagnosed several years ago but haven't been doing anything about it for a while. Hope the Met helps. Things have been going really haywire lately. I'm having symptoms I've never had before (my hair's falling out!!!! didn't even realize that was a symptom till now!!!)
Back to the subject though. I agree if you can get insurance it's definately a good idea, but really hard for some of us to do. When I graduate next may hopefully I'll be able to get a good job with benefits.
