Unhappy I need some help

I am new here but not with pcos. I am 29 and was diagnosed at 20 or 21. I started out on bcp for a few years and stopped. Then I was put on Glucophage and they made me so sick so I stopped them too. I wasnt having regular periods after that and this past Feb I was put on Fortamet. Thats where I am at now. And it is awful. Its been 4 months and I cant stand the daily diarrhea. I have lost 30 lbs and changed my eating habits and still stay sick. Does anyone have any suggestions that would help. Also my husband and I are trying to concieve but at this rate I dont see that happening.
Please tell me there is hope!!!

There is hope! I am not familiar with Fortamet, but my guess is that it is similar to met (since it has met in it's name)...so the side effects would probably be the same. Make sure you eat low carb (and only the good carbs, stay away from all the white stuff: bread, rice, pasta, potatos). If you are determined to stay on some type of medicine like this, buy stock in Immodium. Personally, I take 2 Immodium Advanced just about every day (it is over-the-counter). It really helps. Make sure you take a B complex vitamin supplement. Also, I would suggest an omega fatty acid supplement. Ill look into Fortamet and see if I can find any info for you. Good luck.

I just did a little research and it sounds like Fortamet is another name brand for Metformin. Most of us have heard of Glucophage (another name brand)...but it says that Fortamet is still Metformin HCL (same thing). I think Fortamet is extended release. If you really cant handle the side effects, then there are some other medicines that can help. Actos and Avandia are two. Talk to your doctor.

You can get the extended release of Met. or Gulc. which are much easier on the stomach! Also certain foods will cause tummy problems with Met or Gulc. Lettuce and cabbage as well as fried foods often cause problems with Met.
