I need some Help for My 15 yr old DD with Birth Control
HI I am a PCOS Mom I have PCOS and my 15 yr old does too, they put my dd on birth control to help with the pain she has with her AF, However it has altered her moods as she gets to the end of the pack she becomes very moody and gripy, she is also having break through bleeding and I thought if any teenagers could help me out by telling me if and what kind of birth control pills they are on, It would help me alot, I am taking her back to the dr on the 13th, she has been on these pills for 2 months and her mood is getting blacker and blacker, Please help if you can!!! Thanks

Which kind of birth control is your daughter on? From what you've described, I'm guessing its Ortho-Tricyclen or some other tricyclic (three different dose levels) BCP, since you said things are different when she gets to the end of the pack.
The last week of active pills contains the highest level of hormones, and some people simply cannot tolerate that high a dose. I'm 19 and I take a BCP called Junel (generic for Loestrin). It has a low dose of hormones and the dose is consistent throughout the month - all the pills in the pack are the same, except for the placebo week of course. And as a bonus, the reminder pills contain some iron, since my iron sometimes gets low during AF.
When I took Ortho-Tricyclen it had an effect on me much like you described your daughter is having. My moods were just totally horrible and I drove my boyfriend totally nuts. We even broke up briefly because he thought I was going crazy. I don't have any problems with Junel at all. When my doctor prescribed it I threw the Ortho in the trash.
Make sure you tell your doctor that you think your daughter should be on a BCP that has only one hormone level across the entire month. Junel/Loestrin is a good one and also a lot of cysters like Yasmin (my doctor was going to put me on that next if the Junel didn't work). Good luck to you and your daughter!

PCOS people are best off on monophasic rather than triphasic pills. As a teen, I took Nordette, then Ovcon 35, then in my early 20's plain orthocyclen (NOT Orthotricyclen) and now I'm on micronor (mini pill) since I'm nursing.
There were a few mistkaes with triphasic pills in there before I figured out the problem and I felt AWFUL on them.
she takes a pill called Apri 28 day the first 3 weeks pills are the same color then she goes on the white pills, it says they are Desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, she felt this way the first month she took them our friggin dr said she needs to take them 3 months so her body gets used to them, I took her off them last nite and already there is a mood change.....I feel stupid can you tell me if these are triphasic pills? Thanks for all your help!

It doesn't sound like a triphasic but it doesn't sound like a standard monophasic either. It does say that it can cause mood changes. Trust your instincts. No matter what kind of medication it is, if you're worried about your daughter, you are fully justified in asking that she be put on something different or taken off of it altogether. 15 is a hard age as it is, she doesn't need or deserve this crap on top of it. Especially since teenagers generally carry a higher risk of depression just by virtue of the fact that they're teenagers.

Pcos'ers on bcp are more suceptible (sp?) to developing depression. Sounds like what is happening to her is exaclty what happened to me 11 years ago, only I didn't go off and had 4 months of the worst hell of my whole life until dh was ready to ttc and I went off. I knew I shouldn't have been on them and did it anyway...wish I would have listened, My body knew something was very wrong. Good for you for doing what you feel is best.
I have found that bcp's tend to depleat vitamin b levels and low b-levels are a big problem for people with depression. I found lots of places that mention anytime you are on bcp's, supplement with a very good b-100 or b-50 with it. Just something to concider...
