I have a favor to ask my cysters. Could you please break down the following sentences to "plain English" aka ... tell me what the meaning of these sentences mean to you.
"You may be asked to work overtime, depending on how busy we are. If you do, you will be paid overtime as required by law. Your (manager) must approve overtime hours in advance."
I would greatly appreciate your opinion on how this is stated. Thank you.

I guess I should ask ... in these few sentences ... does it say an individual is REQUIRED to stay for over time. I think that is the better question to ask ....
Thanks.

To me, it doesn't specifically say you are "required" it seems that you have the option to deny, but they probably "expect" you to say yes, so in that case it seems you may be required.
I have been in those situations before...there aren't really options to say no (at least in my past situations) especially when they hire you with that "clause" that states you "may" have to work overtime.

I don't think it says that. However, I think (but am not positive) that Louisiana is an "at-will" state (as opposed to a "just cause" state) which would mean they could fire you if they didn't like the color of your hair, so if you were asked but refused, they would be able to fire you without reason. But that would be true of anything you did or didn't do.
I am aware of the fact that LA is a "at-will" state. I argued that point. But the company that I work for is a national company and do no go by the state rules, it goes by more of the Federal Rules. So that way the WHOLE company is on one page on not different for each state.
The only thing about it is, I have worked for this comapny in another state ... and I was able to work overtime ... if I said yes to doing it. That is why I am questioning it now. It seems that this one store likes to bend the rules when it benefits the company ....
There's nothing saying you cant work overtime. I think if you are interested in working overtime when it is needed by the company tell your manager.
The required part is in reference to them having to PAY you.

I think the "you may be asked" thing means that if you're not willing to work overtime if they need you, don't take the job. It doesn't sound optional to me.
