Ok, I have been waffeling back and forth on this for a long while now. I have very fair skin and dark hair, so my moustache and beard have been noticeable for years. When I was a teen, I used the cream bleach, until it burned me once. Then I just tweesed. Now my hormones are so messed up (not eating right....darn you Ben and Jerry!) that the facial hair is very noticeable. I have been tweezing but the hair is getting away from me. Not only is the beard coming in thicker, but I am now noticing that I am getting hair under my cheek bones on both sides, and side burns that go down to the jaw line. Just the other day I noticed that I am getting some darker hairs up on the top of my cheeks.
After being a widow for two years, I am getting back into dating. I want to feel girly again. I have started wearing make up and want to look nice. I am seriously thinking about shaving. So, which do y'all think is better? I am sensitive to most chemical smells, so I am wondering about the shaving creams irritating me, and I have sensitive skin. I am leaning towards an electric razor, but don't they not shave as close as a regular razor? Even if I decide to try a hand razor first (money is super tight and I don't want to waste it) I don't have any idea how to do this. My late husband was Native American and did not have much to shave, so I don't know how he did it. Where would I start? This is funny because I don't shave under my arms at all (no body sees it) and I hate to shave my legs. Now I am thinking of starting something that I will have to do at least once a day, perhaps twice.... Am I crazy?? I welcome your opinions and instructions. Thanks in advance.
God bless you and yours

hi i know how hard it is to start shaving. i cried for days about mine........ anyway ..... i shave all the time now, every morning. it does get easier - my skin is super sensitive, too. So i use Palmolive sensitive gel. Or else sensitive chemist own brand (superdrug). What i do is up, then down, then across. Then i put on loads of moisturiser Nivea creme. pm me if you want

No, you're not crazy. And I think we all know the awfulness of facing the decision "Will I shave?" -- but in a sense, I think you've already got past the difficult part of that decision which is recognizing that what you have is a moustache and beard. Yes, shaving a moustache and beard is deemed by the public to be a very male thing, but millions of males don't have enough growth to shave and a great many women do.
To me, the great thing about shaving is the simple predictability of it. I have extremely sensitive skin and find that my Norelco rechargeable razor is perfect from the point of view of being non-irritant.
To my initial surprise, all the men who know I shave have responded very positively -- they're interested in the fact, perhaps a little curious about it, but certainly in no way negative and it hasn't spoiled my relationship with them in the slightest.
Norelcos aren't cheap razors and the more expensive ones are definitely better than the cheaper ones, but I saw a cheap battery one yesterday in a supermarket for about $18. One warning though, never use a Norelco on any growth longer than about 1/16" of an inch.
I hope you find shaving as satisfactory an answer as I have.
Thanks ladies for your replies. You know, I think that the only one in my house that will have a problem with this is my 14 year old son. He wants to shave.... we laughingly compare moustaches! Joyblack, just curious....why should I not shave longer hairs with the norelco? Now I am worried! LOL!
God bless you and yours

Stop worrying! It's just that though Norelcos from the men's range are brilliant at dealing with hair shorter than about 1/16", the way the cutter works it really can't handle longer hair and is likely to tug at it and make a poor job. Make sure it's cut close before using the Norelco on it, is all I'm saying. Most Norelcos do have a trimmer built in to trim longer hair close, but their trimmers are nothing special.
I think it's great that you've such an open relationship with your14 year old son. Surely the answer is for you to say to him "Let's start shaving at the same time"? That way, he gets to start shaving, which you say he wants to do, and you don't have any problem about revealing to him, what he'll figure out anyway, that you're shaving. He'll be so glad to be getting to start shaving that he'll think of your starting to shave as something positive. And referring to your moustache and beard under these names will be a real help in his accepting the fact that you need to shave. It looks to me as if you can get a very positive benefit out of all this, as far as your relationship with your son is concerned.
My main suggestion would be to use a man's razor and shaving cream, they are made for the face where women's razors and creams aren't. I started shaving not too long ago and had a really hard time with it and thought, here I go now I will be doing this constantly. And much to my surprise, I only have to shave a couple of times a week, not not nearly as bad as I initially thought.

I have shaved a long time now and its something I totally regret. Yet I do know where you are coming from. I found it made me a slave to it and I hate going out and not having a razor then having stubble. Makes it really hard to be spontaneous. At the same time I had to do something because the hair really bothered me.
Next week I am starting laser hair removal and I can't wait (although my bank account can lol)
Best of luck with whatever you decide

I always hated my facial hair. I actually never shaved it. It was once pretty fine and not to dark. But, then i the mustache hair started getting darker. I am always so self conscious about it. I hate having my picture takend bc I am affraid that the stache will show in the pics.LOL.......
2 weeks ago i started laser and i am hoping and praying that it works. They said not to shave anything b4 i came for my first time. Well, while i was there they used an electric razor and no shaving cream. although it was weird I think it was better then using shaving cream in public. Well when i got done i could not believe the way my face really looks! I really hope the laser works for me.
well, happy shaving.
hugs
dede

You know, waxing removes the hair on your face for a month or so at a time. I go to a beauty college and have it done fairly inexpensively. I just can't wrap my mind around shaving my face.

I used to have to shave up to twice a day, it definitely gave me the closest effect. Waxing was ok but it meant that I had to wait a month or so til enough grew back to do it agian. Bleaching wouldn't work because my growth was too thick and black. Same reason I couldn't use Nair.
The one thing in the world that worked for me was IPL laser hair removal. 7 sessions later and I only need to do a very brief shave every few months. Most of the hair hasn't grown back, and what does, comes in blonde. It gets long (like the old black stuff) so I whizz it now and then...and its no problem whatsoever.
if you can get it, then I recommend that you go for it, but for now...just shave it. Its much better.

Yeah, I still haven't worked up the courage to do this. In fact I am rather hairy today and don't have time to tweeze or shave this morning so I am just going to our home schooling co-op, all hairy! I feel like a female half-big foot! Now, if I can find a male half-big foot, I am all set! *grin*
God bless you and yours

You sure aren't alone! I started shaving my 'stache and the occasional chin hairs in high school. gradually got hairier and hairier, to the point where I shaved twice a day. Currently I'm just doing it once- in the shower, in the morning. If money is tight I'd suggest disposable heads, like a MachIII. I use a Venus and for some reason I like it better- probably because I'm used to it- but that's just me.
I bought a good Norelco and was using it, then lost it when I moved :\ However, I just found it so I'll be starting that up again!
