Somehow I ended up on this website after doing some surfing around tonight. I have had symptoms of PCOS since I was in high school (so nearly 20 years now). I was 25 when I had my first GYN exam. The doctor put me on birth control pills to regulate my cycle. I basically had not had a cycle in 10 years (maybe just one a year at most). The BCP kept me regulated. I went off the pills after being on them for 10 years. I have not had a cycle in the last 2 years without the help of Provera. I have not gotten pregnant either. I started gaining weight when I was in high school during the time I was no longer having a cycle. Later I started developing facial hair.
I will have my yearly GYN exam in December or January. Do I ask my doctor to test me for PCOS? I have told every GYN I have seen about not having a cycle unless I am on BCP. I guess I am surprised that none of them have tried to pinpoint exactly why I don't have a cycle naturally.
Any tips for approaching this topic with my GYN would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I don't really have any advise, since I'm new to this site/newly diagnosed, but WELCOME! I'm glad you found this place, I've learned more about why my body is so wacky here than at any drs office. If I were you, I would definitely look into being tested asap, there are all sorts of treatment that seem to help all sorts of symptoms. Good luck!

You need to see an endocrinologist. Most GYN and PCP's will not diagnose PCOS. My endo told me it was his job to do that, not theirs because it was his specialty. As your PCP for a referral. The facial hair is usually a dead giveaway of PCOS. Also, loss of period, weight gain, skin tags, skin darkening in the folds, insulin resistance (mine was always having low blood sugar), or diabetes.
I am in quite literally the EXACT same boat. Long and short of it is, I've had two back surgeries and I want very much NOT to have another, in spite of my recurrent herniated disk. My Ortho sent me to a pain management doctor. She was the FIRST doctor that started asking questions. I too, have told doctors about my irregular periods. i.e.. NO period. It was irregular in Highschool and a few years later.. then it just got less and less until I literally don't cycle without BC pills. I was married almost a year ago and went off the pills, as I know they are terrible for you and I was with someone who I wanted (we wanted!) children with. I haven't had a period since. I have other symptoms of PCOS, all of them but the facial hair.
Everyone is correct, you need to see an endocrinologist. I have an appointment this coming Friday. I'm scared.. but, also relieved as I may finally find out what's wrong with me. Best of luck to you... be well!
I think it is a little odd that they haven't tested your hormone levels. That's how they found mine. I had high testosteron, irregular periods, etc. My gyn tested me for my hormones, noticed that it was high and referred me to a endo. Took about a year to diagnose me with the endo. Actually he tested me for a year, I moved to another cityand the new endo diagnosed me. You sorta have to advocate for yourself I guess. Push for the tests. That's what I would do.
