Unhappy i think im allergic to spiro

i recently had sinus surgery and my doctor told me to stop taking spiro 1 week before my surgery and start again after so i did.Well i took my first spiro today after being off it for a couple of weeks.I onlt took half a pill instead of a full one and within 10 minutes i got itchy all over and my heart was racing and my face was all red and i felt like i was gonna pass out.I took some benedryl to counteract the effects and now im feeling better.I dont understand this.I've been on this stuff for 5 years with no problems what happenend?I do have a sulfa allergy could sulfa be in these pills?I'm confused!

Sorry to hear that. I'd be lost without my Aldactone

I did some digging for you and came up with:
http://www.nursespdr.com/members/news/rn_jan02.html

"Potassium-sparing diuretics, such as amiloride HCl (Midamor, others), spironolactone (Aldactone, others), or triamterene (Dyrenium), may be a better choice for this patient because that drug class is not associated with a sulfa hypersensitivity reaction."

So there's no sulfa in Aldactone. Could something else have triggered it? Did you take it with some drink you don't normally have?

hi,thanks for the info.i spoke with the nurse at my regular doctor office and she wants me to see the doctor next week on wednesday to talk to him.I did nothing different. But i just am very scared that this happend. She told me not to take another until i see the doctor. The only thing that i'm wondering about is that i've been taking tylenol with codeine for pain and i get itchy from those but i didn't take one for 1 day then i just took the spiro so im wondering if codeine takes awhile to get out of a persons system.I figured it would be gone after a day but who knows.I'll keep you all infomed after my appointment.I'm so disappointed.

Hello

Aww poor you! What a fright. Hope you feel better soon, and that the dr can sort it out for you.

I would say it was the codine!

I had it 3 times in 6months. On the third time is when I started itching like mad.

Which a month after that I developed hives for 5 months.
So been prepared, you could have a problem for some time even though you stopped the med.
Also at that time my sinuses when crazy. I'm still suffering a yr later with cronic ear and sinus pain.

i did a little research and come to find out spironolactone does interact with codeine but i cant seem to find anything that says how.i'm still going to wait and see what my doctor tells me.but im wondering if i just need to give my body time to get rid of the codeine and try the spiro again.im very scared though.i really wish that the surgeon would have known about the interaction before he prescribed me codeine.i even called the office the next day and told him it was making me itch and he said to just take benedryl.imagine if i went into anaphalaxic(sp?)shock?thank god im in tune with my body.

i just got back from my appointment with my regular doctor today and he gave me a prescription for spiro but in the 25 mg dosage and he wants me to try a 25mg and if i do okay work myself back up and if i cant tolerate it stop taking it and talk to the new endo that i will be seeing next week about trying flutamide.Has anybody here ever been on flutamide?I've heard that it is pretty harsh on the liver.I'm hoping that the spiro will be okay for me still though.I'd rather be on spiro instead of flutamide because of the liver stuff.
