You'll find a lot about this in other threads. In a nutshell, with PCOS in many instances our bodies have been sensitized to respond to testosterone and our ovaries produce testosterone in large quantities, sometimes leading to levels of "free" testosterone comparable to what is found in males. Because in many instances our bodies have been sensitized to respond to it, these high levels of unbound testosterone cause us to develop a hair pattern which is similar to that more typically found in males -- high levels of body hair, significant moustache and beard growth, and thinning/balding of the scalp hair in a pattern usually associated with males, starting by general thinning and more specifically progressing to loss of hair at the temples and crown.
does thinning of the hair and hair loss eventually occur in all women that have pcos?
I've wondered this too. I've got crazy thick hair. It's really coarse and frizzy to when I don't take the time to straighten and tame it. I had a big shed after I had been on my low carb diet awhile, and also around the time soon after I started BCP and spiro. Both times it stopped after a few months. It's been about 4 months since the last one. Now I have all these little crazy 1-2 inch hairs sticking out everywhere, so I guess that means it's growing back. I can't really tell a difference in it. I'm afraid it will happen again and not stop or grow back. It sounds like a lot of us develop this symptom eventually.

That can happen just by changing medications? I just started taking Spiro in October and I've been noticing lately a lot of hair loss when I wash my hair. I'm not sure if it could be something else but that would be nice...

Yes, lot's of meds can cause temporary hairloss. I noticed it about 3 weeks after I started the spiro. It lasted about around 5-6 weeks, and then returned to normal shedding. At the peak of it, I was freaking out. One day I counted 270+ hairs in the shower drain. I called my RE, and he told me it happened to some women because of the BCP or the spiro. It was all over the head, and never really got to the point where I would say it was thin. It does take a little less time to dry now, but I can tell I have lots of new hair coming in. These little short ones are sticking out in every direction when I pull my hair up.
Definitely encouraging...I never had terrible hair loss until after I started Spiro (like I said, been on it since October, was mildly concerned about hair loss at the time but it was never this much) and it's definitely all over my head. Doesn't seem to be the typical male pattern.
