I thought this was normal!!! Are hairs on nipples hirstutism?
Ok, when asked if I had hair on my chest I always thought of the space between my breasts. I never had hair there, so I said no, I have never had hair on my chest. I have always had rather big, black hairs around my nipples, though. I have plucked one to four hairs from each nipple since I can remember, and I always thought all women had hairs on their nipples. The hair on my head was blond when I was a child and is light brown now. I thought it was normal to have lots of black leg hair, be hairy in the bikini area, and have nipple hair also. The only hairs I worried about were the ones I would sometimes get on my chin - always more of those if I weigh more.
Now I am told that, no, it isnt common for women to have hair around their nipples this way. How many of you have this, and do you agree that it is a symptom of PCOS?
Ok, this was a first. Normally I do a search to see what is out there before posting a new thread... but this time I was so blown away I wasn't thinking.
How many things that I have thought were normal, part of getting older, just an every day thing will turn out to be another sign of PCOS?? It blows my mind.
Umm I really don't think that a few stray hair around the nipple are PCOS related. Where ever I have read it says that any woman can have upto 10-15 stray hair around her nipples and it is ok to pluck them out (for cosmetic reasons ofcourse). Though obviously not everyone has those. I started getting mine about 6 years back, when I was 18. And m sure if my mother were to see those she'd freak out (AND she is a doctor!!!!!) since she is as smooth as a....umm...as an eggplant??(couldn't think of anything else ). But NOW I do think, that whatever hair I have around my nipples are coz of PCOS, coz if 15 is normal then 30 is definitely not. So, yes, it depends on the amount of hair you have to decide if they are PCOS related.
I thought it was normal to have lots of black leg hair,
While most American women have some leg hair, there are plenty who have none. And many ethnic groups have little or none. Higher levels of male hormones lead to more and coarser leg hair.

almost all women of all ethnic backgrounds are hairy there. Most have the hair in a "female" pattern with a straight top edge to the pubic hair. Where there are high levels of testosterone, though, there may well be a trail of hair up to the belly button.

and have nipple hair also.
these are not at all uncommon, but are indicative of high testosterone levels.

Again those occur where testosterone levels are high. Some of us have full male-type beard growth.

Although I've got full male-type moustache and beard growth I don't have nipple hair. It probably is caused by the high testosterone levels caused by, or typical of, PCOS.
