Hey guys, my name is Sharron and I am from Norther Ireland in the UK. I have PCOS but my doctors are no help whatsoever. I don't know how I can treat this or what to do. I have constant headaches and lack of energy all the time. I have really bad backpain, serious levels of depression, terrible hair growth and acne. I hate it but I have got no help from anyone. Can anyone refer a doctor for me or suggest any help please.
shaz
Although at this time there isn't a cure for PCOS, there are ways to treat its symptoms.

I just want to welcome you as well, another Cyster from the UK! I know how hard it is, we never seem to be taken seriously here and not given help on the level that most of our American Cysters are I hope you find a new doctor that has more knowledge or PCOS or refers you to a specialist who can advise you better. x

My advice is to just keep going to doctor after doctor until one LISTENS to you and starts to HELP you. Unfortunately there are a lot of doctors out there that either don't care, write us off as "complaining women" or don't know anything about PCOS and related conditions.
The best thing I ever did was try new doctors until I found my lovely Dr Jo, and things have been SO much better since I've been going to her.
Hopefully someone on here can recommend a good GP in your area, as that's how I found mine.
As a UK girl I know how you feel - and unfortunately we can't just keep going from Doctor to Doctor - it's kind of an area lottery - you can change your Dr once or twice but too many times and other Doctors can refuse to take you on their list.
I have had problems getting any help too - BCPs can help some people and you can get Dianette prescribed in the UK. It does help with hair growth and AF!
There are also alternative remedies to try with PCOS - you can find lots of info on the alternative remedies forum.
I take Kelp each day because it really helps with metabolism, energy and hair growth (I call it my herbal speed, lol) - also taking a chromium GTF (you can get it from Holland & Barrett) with each meal will really help with IR issues too.
Other things that can help are:
try having 6 small meals a day to keep blood sugar stable so you never feel overley hungry and get that blood sugar drop;
eat plenty of EFAs - low fat diets are still quite popular in the UK but not necessarily a good thing for us PCOSers because we need healthy fats to produce hormones. You can get it from Evening Primrose Oil; Flaxseed Oil; nuts and seeds and by eating canned red wild salmon (or taking fish oil capsules)
Saw Palmetto can help with excess testosterone and so can licorice (but read up on them on the net first to make sure there are no contraindications for you)
reducing your carbs can really make a difference with symptoms - or at least swapping white products for wholegrains.
A great place to start is Gillian McKeith's You Are What You Eat website or cookbook. Her recipes are all whole, unprocessed and fairly low in carb and gives you extra ideas for foods you may not have tried before.
There are many diet options to help with symptoms - the IR diet and Body for Life are two good, not too difficult options!
If you visit the Diet and Exercise board you'll find loads of info there!
Good Luck and Welcome to SC

Hi and welcome.
It is so overwelming when you first find out you have PCOS, then to have an unhelpful doctor to top it off. It tooks me a few doctors to finally find one i liked.
Maddy pretty much summed up some basics in the post above me.
Metformin is another thing you could research on for taking. Check out the Metformin board.
The alternative board would be another good one to check out as well.
Good luck, and hope to hear from ya soon.

Welcome to SC. If you're limited as to how many dr changes you can make, why not ring a few in your area to ask if they've dealt with PCOS before, and how? That way you can make an informed decision and hopefully switch just once.

Hey guys, thank you so much for all yoru help and advise.
I have copied and pasted replies and helpful tips to my email and fwd a copy to mum so she can help me out too. I am at uni now so will be registering with a new doctor anyway. I will find out how much they know about pcos and if they say the same thing about losing weight and being no help whatsoever - i will be going in search of pcos-friendly doctors.
Love you all loads, shaz xxx

Hey there, sorry for being really dumb but there are a lot of things I don't understand about your message:
What are BCPs?
What is Dianette
What is AF!
What is chromium GTF and what does it do?
What are IR issues?
What are EFAs?
What is Saw Palmetto?
How easy is it to eat 6 meals a day? I have trouble fitting in 3 meals a day
Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack??? I guess I could do it like that
I sorry for being a bit thick, im new to all this and don't understand technical terms
