Default i want to try saw palmetto but.......

i dont want to get pregnant and im on the birth control pill.So i've been doing tons of research and ive asked every pharmacist in my area and my doctor if it will make my bcp pill less effective and im getting conflicting advice. All the pharmacists and my doctor are telling me to go for it and it wont effect my pill but the herbalists ive talked to are telling me i could end up pregnant if i take saw palmetto because it will kill my pills effectiveness. In the midst of my research i came across alot of those pills that make your breasts bigger and they contain saw palmetto and they claim that it will not effect the pill.I dont want the breast growth pills i just want to try saw palmetto because ive heard about all the wonderfull things it does for acne and excessive hair growth.Help!!!!!Do i try it or not?Who should i believe?

wow that is a toughie...I would lean on the doctor's advice...but why not try calling a manufacturer of the saw palmetto and see if they can answer your questions...

Default Trying it

I'm trying saw palmetto now, however I'm taking it in conjunction with spironolactone and BCP. I've taken it for about 4 weeks, and 50mg/day spironolactone. I've noticed that I am spotting (black/brown stuff) constantly. I also have to urinate more requently but I know that's from the spironolactone.

However, big difference in the hair growth. Last time I plucked was three days ago

Apparently saw palmetto acts to reduce the conversion of testosterone to the bad dihydroxytestosterone and it also blocks DHT receptors, thereby inhibiting the DHT action. I haven't found any explanation on how it reduces testosterone levels. But I think the first two points are where all the action is.

Anyhow, good luck and keep us updated!

Hi Frenchie!

I don't think I've noticed breast enlargement from taking the sp for 6 months now - maybe they are firmer and perkier but I was hoping that was because of all the weight lifting and pushups - I can actually do real pushups now WOW

I hear ya, t is really hard to know who to believe. I went through the same thing myself and STILL worry about it sometimes. I think it's criminal that herbs are not tested in this country because they are not able to be patented by the big drug companies. Such a huge waste and loss.

I wonder if there are any European studies? Maybe not, because again, saw palmetto is not really marketed for women. We are on the cutting edge here!

What about using a diaphram or something as backup?

Maureen,

Did you notice any bad side effects from the saw palmetto?

I'm taking metformin and am hearing a lot of good things about saw palmetto from the posts, like it reducing testosterone levels. It doesn't raise estrogen levels, does it?

I really have noticed no side effects whatsoever (well other than good ones!)

My research has shown that it doesn't REDUCE testosterone, it prevents it from converting to the active form, called DHT. I have not seen anything about it effecting estrogen.

I didn't notice a change either way.
I think I read a post on the Hair forum that someone said she thought it actually controlled her sugar cravings. Do you have a link to where you heard this about increasing appetite?
Unfortunately you might just have to experiment. I think it could also depend on what day in your cycle you are on and if your insulin is under control too.

I read that in a book I have about Nutritional Healing, and found it on this website today:
http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/g.../article.jhtml

But if none of you seem to have trouble with it, it may be worth a try!

thanks
