how the heck do i go to my medical doctor asking about alternative medicine??
ie..i want to stop met/gluc and try either insulite or vitex etcetc.... but how could i explain this stuff to them when i dont even understand it all myself???
i know i want to stop met... but between the cost of buying insulite or vitamins up the wahzoo and getting a doc to work with me ..it seems very hard.
any thoughts?

I suggest seeing a naturopath. Until you understand what the various remedies that you're looking at actually do, please don't stop taking your medication. A naturopath can help you understand what will work for you.

It is sometimes hard to talk to your doctor about alternative treatments. Some are familiar with them and some are not.
Some say, "this is what I recommend, but you can do what you want."
Many doctors won't really work with you if you want alternatives, either because they don't know a whole lot about herbal remedies, they don't believe that they work, or they are offended that you are not following their expert advise. If you do something other than what the MD Rx's, then you are pretty much on your own. Maybe you will get lucky, and your MD will be willing to work with you as you try alternatives. Or you might have to go to a natural/holistic practitioner which your insurance usually doesn't cover.
In my own battle with PCOS, I found alternatives that are sooooo simple, and easy to do (and inexpensive), and soooo effective, that I never had to go to a naturopath, and I haven't even seen my OB since my baby was born 2.5 years ago.

I second Ajani's response, that a naturopathic doctor knows best how to treat you using natural support. Certified N.D.s are educated in all of the same basic sciences as an M.D. but also studies holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness. In my experience, I have never found a traditional Dr. that has encouraged me in my quest to heal my body naturally without prescription drugs.

Please remember that just because something is natural, that does not mean it's harmless. I learned that the hard way when I found out that Vitex only makes things worse for me. I went without a cycle for a very long time because I started taking Vitex. And it took a while for my body to recover from that once I stopped taking it. It's not for everyone. Nothing is. A qualified alternative health practitioner can be of great value in navigating the sea of choices out there.
