Thumbs down I went from having pcos to not having it,to having it bad, and now to havin Diabetes

Since the first of the year.... I went from having PCOS, to not, to having it bad.... to today getting the mail and I have diabetes and have to restart treatment immediately. I knew it was possible but Dang it, I'm not ready for this. I have so much else going wrong with my body I can't do this too. ( I just can't stop crying. This sucks.

Terilynn,

Yes, it completely sucks, I agree. I don't blame you for crying like crazy about it. When I found out last summer I had diabetes, it was really scary.

It's normal to feel like crap about this news, and you will feel like crap about it and in shock for a while.

Now, here's the good news. Diabetes is the ultimate self-help disease! I can't think of another condition where you have so much power to control the course of what happens to you! Once you learn the ins and outs of blood sugar control, and you get some meds that work for you, things will get easier. And diabetes is extremely responsive to diet and especially to exercise.

In short, this is something you can control. It doesn't have to control you. And I hope that you, like me, find yourself a year from now being HEALTHIER than you have been in years, cause you have been forced to take better care of yourself. I know I am almost glad I have diabetes now. It was a wake up call for me to straighten out some bad habits.

But yes, I agree, it SUCKS, as does PCOS! Don't let it hold you back or keep you from living your life!

I agree, you cant let it get you down, us women are fighters and we just have to go with the blows..I too have just been recently diagnosed with Diabetes and Pcos after being misdiagnosed for about 18 yrs, had it been picked up sooner then perhaps the diabetes wouldnt have took hold ..but it did and yes it is a shock and its a real pain in the a** but I am not letting it take over my life Im going with the flow, taking meds and trying to follow some form of diet.. its still early days with me also but there are good meds, doctors and of course our families and friends here for support so together we can plough through the gunk and get through it all

big hugss to you xx

Default my family is NO support

they are all like it's your own fault, or just get over it. Or my son keeps offering me candy or snacks. The drs office hasn't even told me what to eat, take or nothing. Just to keep my endocrinology appt monday. So I'm just doing what I know to do, following a sensible diet, and drinking diet sodas instead of sugared, and little breads and carbs. Everything else in moderation. No candies and no sugar stuff. Like I eat meat, and veggies for dinner. No potatoes. No carbs that way. No pastas if I can help it. Oh well. Hopefully they'll give me the information monday when I see the endocrinologist and the "diabetes nurse" . But that's not until monday afternoon. I know I'm doing one big no no.... whole fat milk. But I hate slim and low fat milk. But I only use it for cereal and coffee. Everything else I use low fat (2%). I just can't drink it.

Thanks gals.

HUGS

I was ok from that respect, I already drank low fat milk and used low fat dairy products, diet fizzy drinks so from that respect it wasnt much change. The biggest change for me is chocolate! I love it and I crave it too much lol I have read elsewhere this is common with pcos and can be reduced once treatment is started, I am on met and have to admit the craving is slightly reduced but hits me big time around AF time!

I have gone to sweeteners in my coffee and don't take sugar in tea but now I find because I have a much lower sugar intake that I get shaky and feel weak where my sugar seems to drop that low, I'm not at a point that I have a tester for my blood sugar but am now wondering if it would be an idea to test at these times?

When I get to that state even if I have eaten then my automatic response is to get sugar into my system and within minutes I am fine again! Its still early days so I guess I will find it balancing out in time. The diabetic nurse I saw just talked about having a good low fat diet and didnt get into it in too much detail but I am going to a specialist dietician to work out whats best for me with the pcos and diabetes so will hopefully learn alot more and be able to pass on some hints and tips

When will you see your specialized dietician? I don't have an appointment yet. I've asked for an appointment. But I don't have one yet. My pcp says the endocrinologist will set it up. I see him tomorrow (Monday 7-12). I'll be glad when the land of limbo is over. Sometimes I just get tired of it, and eat like I used to, and sometimes I go to the extreme and eat nothing with sugars (other than natural sugars like fruit) and low carb. I know from when my mom was on the diabetic diet 17 years ago, and things have changed greatly since then, that she was allowed so many carbs, so many meats, and veggies, and all that. It worked out in an exchanges program. The first diet she was on she had more food than she could eat, but wasn't loosing weight, so they cut her back and she starved. I want to loose weight, but I don't wanna starve. I don't wanna do it this way. I already exercise a lot 3 days a week (cardio and weights) and then I walk 3 other days a week. But the weight keeps going up.

Please stay in touch.

Oh another question. Do you know which tests they did on you and what your numbers were?

Thanks

Default I'm still in limbo land

The endocrinologist (supposedly the best) says I'm either prediabetic or slightly diabetic. He wants a glucose tolerance test. The one they do when you have a baby. YUCK! I hated that when I was pregnant. I got so sick. It's a 3 hour test. You give a fasting sample, then you drink this nasty tasting sugar crap... which made me sick last time. And you wait an hour get blood drawn, wait another hour, get blood drawn, another hour blood drawn, and can finally go home. A couple days later you hear the results. Then I'll hear diabetes or prediabetes. He's completely throwing out the elevated fasting insulin levels. I don't understand that. But I guess I'm glad. Means not having to do anything yet. I met with the diatician and the diabetes counselor yesterday. They taught me to test my sugar, but the dr said not to do that yet. Maybe when I start the glucophage. He's leaning towards putting me back on it. Only on a higher dose. The 500 mgs weren't working anymore. I had quit getting my periods, the acne was back, and I had lost my energy. It had stopped suppressing my appetite, and I just generally was tired all the time. My facial hair started growing ( hadn't had it before that). So he's thinking of going up to 1000 mgs of the ER.

Take care
