Default Ian Wright's Unfit Kids

Anyone seen this?

http://www.channel4.com/health/micro...ght/index.html

Being repeated on Sky Real Lives at the moment - I missed it first time round. It's pretty interesting although poor Ian has his work cut out, with all those moody teenagers!

My kids' secondary school is a specialist sports college (they aren't into sport - it's just the nearest school!) And last week, my 13 year old came home with the ignredients for the cooking lesson - it was full of things that are so unhealthy I don't even have them in the house, eg: white sugar, white flour, chocolate chips - and they were making muffins. I just gave him substitutes - wholefood stuff, because I'm not even going there with my kids, buying that. Made me mad that everyone whinges about kids being overweight now and then a sports school, of all places, isn't co-ordinating what it's doing!

Anyway, I hope Ian succeeds with these kids. They seem quite a feckless lot, this episode I'm watching, and he's struggling!

I watched this last time round

Some teenagers will be a PITA but others will be eager to learn ect and loose weight which helps Ian carry on with them but it must be frustrating.
At my school which promotes healthy food -its actually more expensive to eat healthy there for example - sausage in a bun covered with melted cheese - 70p tuna and salad roll(small) 95p - see what i mean

Jorice I haven't said anything as I might want to go there to do some observations for my return to teaching course... so I'd have to be in the staffroom with the cookery teacher! But I will have a quiet word with the Head - or write a letter - after I've finished, there! I do a LOT of baking, but I use honey instead of sugar, wholemeal flour etc so I don't have the naughty stuff even in the cupboard!

LOL Jess nah it ain't - you just got to know where to shop!

My sons' school got rid of all the old fizzy pop machines, and stopped selling chocolate etc a few years back, now and most of the school dinners do seem to be healthy stuff, to be fair - but then it's a small school, they can do it more easily than a big one. My oldest son went there a couple of years back, and he lived on Irn Bru and chips for school lunch!

Oh eck, don't ask me about amounts, I just lob it in! It's how my dad used to bake, too! Sort of eyeball it. That said, I'm old and think in ounces not grams, and a level tablespoon of some things is roughly and ounce lol! That's so unscientific, eh! Another trick is - esp for the fat and honey - whatever I think it is, reduce it a bit. But I've been cooking since I was a kid in the 70s, so that's my excuse... I never eat my baking, either the kids have the lot! But then with 5 kids, it doesn't go very far!

Unfortunately I also inherited my dad's habit of getting bored of doing things the same way twice so am always changing the recipes, and adding different things esp herbs or spices! I've found the cheap honey they sell in Iceland which is just plain nasty to eat 'raw', is fine in cooking!
