my hubby was watching Shameless the other night, and he told me that this was a line from the show! (apparently someone ordered a curry from the chinese and some guy said to her ''if you eat that, you'll get PCOS"
I guess this was meant to be funny, but thats a really popular show and anyone who isn't in the know and who watches it, might think that you only get PCOS if you eat too much, or just presume that every overweight woman only has PCOS because of what they eat. Cue more women being abused for being fat, and it being 'their own fault'.
I never saw it myself but wondered if anyone here did...

Wow, georgy! Just when I thought that humor has sunk as far as it could go, here we see a new all time LOW! I don't know if it's backlash for the progress that women have made ecomomically, socially, etc, but lately we seem to be made fun of for bodily states and functions that we have often have no control over. While we have thankfully made progress in awareness of the cruelty of racial jokes, women seem to be the new target for ridicule. Evidence of this is the plethora of jokes about our weight, periods and PMS, menopause, and even hair color (sorry, but I think that blonde jokes are the same anti-women jokes that I used to cringe at in the 1960's being recycled in a thinly disguised derogatory content). I don't like jokes like that and now women with PCOS are targets?! Come on, world, give us a break! I would have been livid to hear a line like that on a TV show. Not only is that not funny, but totally false, of course. I am so tired of humor that degrades people for things that they often have no control over. I think it's cruel and mean.
I am shocked.

What station is Shameless on? I agree with what you said about jokes that put people down for things they cannot control. I tend to take them with a grain of salt, though. To me it depends on the context the joke was made. Obviously, the PCOS thing was a slam againist women with PCOS and referring that it's an excuse for women to be overweight and not a true disorder. I wonder how men would like it if a woman went on Jay Leno or someother well broadcast show and made jokes about ED etc etc?
How stupidly naive. That isnt even funny, and just adds the guilt feelings I have already about giving myself PCOS (which I know isnt true, but I cant help thinking it).
I wonder if I can download it. Was it on this friday? Is it channel 4? Ive never actually watched the show... it has just never appealed, and after hearing that, Im glad I havnt.

you can download it, but it was the latest episode so if you live in the UK and have cable/sky/freeview then you'll see a repeat sometime this week, just keep an eye out.
If you want to download it, click on the right side of the page and it'll explain how...it costs from 99p per show I think.
I can't believe they said that....unbelievable!!! Talk about misinformation. Think of the damage a comment like that could do. I'm cringing as I type! How very unfair of them. I think this warrants a letter of complaint!
The more I think about it, the more I think it will do damage, but I think that if there's a backlash and it's made public then we'll just be mocked even more.

I am going to look out for it on more4 so I can watch it myself... once I have seen it then I will be in a better position to write a letter of complaint.

I suppose the reaction if you do make a complaint will something like - the show is meant to depict an urban family, who are sub normal in IQ and who are probably ignorant of the facts relating to PCOS, and that the writers did not mean to convey inaccurate facts etc etc.
I get that, its just that there are so many ordinary people out there who don't know about PCOS and who will see that and just jump to conclusions. While I'm typing all this, I'm wondering if I've lost my funny bone

I dont think you have lost your funny bone at all.
Why couldnt they just say "if you eat that, you'll get fat" instead of making a stupid and incorrect link to PCOS. If they had said "if you eat that, you'll get AIDS"... Do you think the AIDS community would keep quiet?

I love Shameless (and am really looking forward to Skins) but I agree with all of you. I was shocked when I heard that comment.. most people I know have no idea what PCOS is so it seemed a rather strange piece of writing. is there some connection between PCOS and MSGs? I believe I've read that somewhere before.. it does seem ridiculous if that's what was being referred to! I'm sure none of the characters in the show would know anything about PCOS.
