i have read/heard that you cannot take avandia or actos while preg, unlike met/gluc, is that correct??
if so,, do you need to stop taking avandia immediately when you get a bfp?
and if you do need to stop quickly,,, how would that affect a pregnancy?? meaning, if you abruptly stop a med like this, can it make your body go nutty and m/c??
or can/ should you switch to met/gluc for the rest of the pregnancy to prevent gd?
ok..the reason i am asking is i think i am switching to avandia... maybe actos this week bc my ir sucks on met/gluc.
if lets say i get pg while on the medication ( if i ever ovulate again that is lol..btw not curerntly ttc...but may be within the upcoming year)... i am worried that i would "hurt the baby" if i concieve while on avandia/actos.
any thoughts? ty xo jenn

I think (meaning don't quote me on this & you'd probably have to check it out further) that if you keep taking avandia/actos while pg, the sex organs could be messed up. This is different w/ met/gluc as they don't have any adverse effects on the fetus. All my Int. Med. Sp. said was to call her as soon as I got a BFP so she could tell me what to do (basically to stop it). You could take met/gluc but I've heard that it takes about 3 months for it to start working which would mean that by the time it did start working, you'd be stopping it (you only take it through the 1st tri). I can't take met/gluc b/c I'm resistant to it so my only options are avandia/actos (I'm taking actos). Have no idea if it's working or not though...I've been on it for about 2 months now.
They do have Avandamet which is Avandia & Met all in 1 pill. That might work for you & then you would just switch to Met when/if you were to get pg

I just had a discussion with my endo on this very subject. He is letting me stay on my Avandia 8mg while I was doing Clomid but as soon as I get my BFP he wants me to stop it immediately and call him so he can prescribe something else that is safe during pg. He is letting me stay on the metformin 2000mg for as long as I want when I do get pg.
Good Luck !

i think the problem with Avandia and Actos is there just isn't enough data suggesting it is safe to take in pregnancy... i don't think it's been proven that they are harmful. Now they say with Met... it also isn't PROVEN... but anectdotally, a lot more women have taken it while pregnant and nursing and it has had no adverse effects on the fetus/baby.
Spiro is the pill that may have negative effects on the reproductive organs, since it limits the effects of testosterone. Actos and Avandia are not hormonal meds... they control insulin levels which in turn allowes normal hormonal functions to take place... I don't think they would have a negative effects on reproductive development.
I would love to see Avandia and Actos approved for use during pregnancy... I am weaning my baby in the hopes of going on Avandia and getting cycles back and TTC #2... but it kills me to have to wean before I'm ready. Oh well.
FWIW it seems a LOT of cysters have gotten preg on Avandia or Actos and then gone off at the +++ HPT and had healthy babies. I really think it's the unknown that is the problem here.

LOL, too many drugs...I got confused!
Spiro is what I was thinking of when I said about the reproductive organs...Sorry...
With a lot of meds there just isn't enough info about the adverse/no adverse effects on the fetus. I know that 1 of my asthma meds is catagory D but all of them are & there have been no studies to say whether it is good or not (who the heck is going to sign up for a pg study to see if they take a certain med that their baby is going to come out normal or w/ a green head!). I asked my dr & she said that all the asthma meds are like that (the inhalers are Cat C but all the other meds are Cat D) b/c there have been no studies done but for as long as she's been practicing & for as long as she's known there have been no adverse effects on the fetus (this in no way contributed to my m/c's b/c I was only taking it during the 2nd one & none of the others as well as the same w/ my inhaler).
Ok, I think that was completely off topic but I was trying to give an example...
