I hope my UK cysters don't mind me poking in - I usually stick to the mommy forum and I could post this as OT but I'll post it here where it more rightfully belongs instead.
I was wondering... I know this is silly, but. What we call a "vacation," you guys call a "holiday," right? So what do you call what we call a holiday (ie, Christmas)?
AND... what is this "Bank Holiday" that is joked about in Bridget Jones, Wallace & Grommit... do your banks just take off at random, and no one knows when? Or are they just holidays for no real reason so no one thinks about them until they go to the bank and find them closed?
(I know, this is all very silly... but help me broaden my horizons here )

"We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken, sobbing, with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip..."
- the verve pipe
Haha! We truly are separated by a common language aren't we!
Here holidays are time off work, ie going away somewhere, or in my case, staying at home, but not working. School holidays are whent he children don't go in.
Bank holidays happen throughout the year on a Monday and yes, the banks are shut. Quite often other businesses have the day off and shops etc are open shorter hours. There are so many "statutory" days workers get off in the year and these usually fall on bank holidays. If you don't get that particular day off you get a day in lieu and some businesses pay extra for people working on these days. (Not mine )
Bank holidays are days like Christmas day and boxing day, New years day, May 1st (or nearest Monday) and there another few in may, September etc. I can't remember exactly. I think the total number of statutory days is 12.
We tend to refer to Christmas as Christmas I'm aftraid, or some people would say the "Festive Season" I suppose. Maybe others have different names for it.
And of course the most important holiday in the Scottish calendar is Hogmany!

"Bank Holiday" is a term that is used in the US too, for the same reason. Obviously, they're different days from the UK but the same idea applies.
I've heard them used for holidays where most companies do not give off, like Columbus Day. Unless you work for the government or banks, you probably work that day. Then the term "holiday" seems to refer to the big holidays that most companies give off, like Christmas and July 4.

I think you already have your answers but I just wanted to jump in and say that when I was little and traditionally in the UK Bank Holidays were rather like Sundays in that everyone was off work, including shops. There are quite a few shops that open on Bank Holidays now but in the main the shopping centres close too, as well as schools and most businesses.
In England we have Bank Holidays in April, May, two in August, Christmas and New Year's Day.
