Hi my name is melissa and im new to this site. My doctor told me I had pcos only after I said something to him about it. Well to begain with Im 23 and have 2 kids One 8 and one 2. The 8 year old is my stepson. After I got married I wanted to start trying to get pregnant so i quit the bc pills. After i quit I went 9 months without a period(this was the first time I had ever had this problem)them found out I was pregnant. At 3 months i mc snd my body just down away with the baby. I had a D&C done then my doc waitrd for me to have a period and gave me Clomid to take .I got pregnant right away and had a little girl. I started my bc again everything went well. I was having chest pains and thought the pills were putting some pounds on me so i went to get a different kind. The doctor i saw which was not OB would not put me on any more because of having chest pains. I this time I just quit taking anything all togather . No period for a few months then I had one and some on and off with the periods . I went to my doctor and told him what was going on and he gave me meds to start my period. It Worked but I didnt like taking this med. So here I am no period!! My doc told me at my last visit only after I said something to him about pcos that I had it. and said I could not get Pregnant on my on. And he didnt act like having this was a bad thing. so can someone give me some advice? This is driving me crazy no one else in my family has this problem...
Sorry this is so long but I needed to vent!! Thanks, Melissa
Hi and welcome to SC!
You should try finding a Dr in your area that know's about PCOS. Also you can try taking Metformin, that helps a lot of people get regular again, and also helps with weight.
Good Luck!

Welcome! WOW...I would start by getting a new doctor..that one sounds terrible. I highly recommend finding a good reproductive endocrinologist (RE). It sounds like you probably have PCOS. It tends to get worse with age, weight, and after each pregnancy. It is very common to have no periods (or only a couple per year) or to have the exact opposite problem and bleed non-stop. There are some risks associated with PCOS, especially if untreated. However, those risks are lowered with proper treatment. One of the risks is endometrial cancer...this is usually caused because you don't get a period. So, it's important to get at least 4 periods a year (you might have to take Provera or some other similar drug to bring on a period). This will help protect you from the cancer. Other risks include heart issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, and blood clots. The best treatment seems to be metformin (which is an insulin sensitizing med), exercise, and a low carb diet. It is thought that the underlying cause of PCOS is actually insulin resistance (hence the insulin sensitizing drugs). Anyway..you found a great place to get answers...so ask away. We're here to help, if we can.

thank you for all your welcomes and advice. Since going around the website and reading lots of info on pcos I have decided to start back taking Medroxyprogesterone which the brand name is Provera. My dr had giving me this my last visit in Jan. but I had mood swing so i quit taking it . Now after reading everything I called in to get my refill. I also am not quite sure when I start back taking it after af. What does eveyone think about this med. And can you get preg while taking it? But I do wish my dr would do some testing. He gave me this med to start af. Which it did in Jan. Can yall tell im so confused??

Provera won't make you ovulate, so the chances of getting pg while on it is slim to none (although Im sure there are a few that that's happened to...but not likely to happen). Make sure you take a pg test before taking it (just in case) and then follow the directions on the bottle. I would only do this if you haven't had a period in awhile. I think it would be a great idea to put a call into your doctor to keep him/her abreast of what's going on. Make sure they think taking the Provera is a good idea. GOod luck.

I took provera to enduce a period ( I didnt get one for 5 months). My doctor made sure I was not pg already because if I was, it would not be good for the baby. I would check with your doctor, you may not need to take it if you are getting a period regularly. I was just given it as a chance to see if after an enduced period, if I would get back to ovulating.
Good luck!
