I feel the same way. I've read a lot but I am doing a low gi diet. My book talks about looking at the low gi value of your food item. It talks about the load. carb content x gi value divided by 100 is your load. talk about the range for health. This is the book I have but I am sure there are a lot out there that are easier . This was just more informative. I now need a book more on low Gi recipes and values. This just kind of explains it.http://www.amazon.com/Glucose-Revolu...043009&sr=1-22

Some other possibilities.... South Beach Diet, Insulin Resistance (resistant?) Diet. Both advocate what I call 'smart' carbs. IR diet also has a notion of balancing (which I think is helpful for PCOS).

I haven't done WW in a long time, but I believe their 'Core' program aligns with smart carbing. You could also look up their "zero point vegetables" which tend to be lower carbs.

I would look for a thread on the buddy groups and see if you can join some folks already doing the plan/style that interests you most.

In the meantime, general rules of thumb:
- minimize white bread, pasta, and rice (do whole wheats/brown instead)
- eat smaller portions more frequently (so 3 medium-sized meals with a snack between each)
- bump your protein, especially for snacks (include nuts, cheese, or eggs for example)
- minimize/skip starchy vegetables (root veggies like potatoes are very starchy)
- eat more green veggies (spinach, lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, celery)
- lots and lots and even more water all day

Patty I am on the same boat as you I am so lost on where to start! I just got diagnosed with pcos 2 months ago and I know I need to change my diet but I don't know what to change! So from what I understand you need to cut carbs and sugar is that correct?

There are a few good books on a low GI diet. GI being glycemic Index and it is a good place to start. I started by cutting out all pops, all junk food, and fast food had to go too. Although it's not always 100% gone *blushes* I could bring some books up with me for you to try out next time we come up to visit mom.

while the carb on the bread matters.... check the fiber content as well... if you can get one with a higher fiber count it 'offsets' some of the carb.

there's a rule somewhere, but i don't remember it off the top of my head. maybe it was 5g or more of fiber?

i'd also suggest eating some protein at breakfast time. (1) it will balance out the carb/sugar in the apple, (2) protein helps fill you up and fuel your body -- if you're cutting back on carbs (or eating smarter carbs) you want to make sure you're getting enough protein and that it's spread out over the day.

just my two cents. hope it helps.

Well tysmama you just have to be patient with yourself and start small. start cutting things you know are not good and start adding things that are healthier. ITS ALL ABOUT CHOICES. WE HAVE TO DECIDE WE WANT THIS. It's definatly a struggle and I have yet to have a day where I ate everything healthy instead ive chose a few meals that were easier rather than Just getting the Salad out and cutting up all the veggies but Im looking at it like this even though I made a bad choice I still made more good choices through out my day so I dont feel so bad sooo these are things ive done I went out and bought a big tub of spring mix salad it has all the good lettuce ive been eating that with rice vinegar on it which is not bad and if u get the regular flavor its zero carbs for brekfast ive switched it up to a quarter cup of life cereal with nonfat milk or a bananna, apple or one slice of five seed bread and an egg as far as snacks ive been eating pecans, carrots , apples, peaches and nectarines i also started taking a heart healthy vitamin pack i bought ground turkey instead of beef and lean pork sooo this is where im at im trying to make better choices goodluck ladies we are all in the same boat even if it feels like we are alone we are not we can do this I dont know about any of you really but it helps me to get on this site and see that people are reading what i typed and actully responding to what i write it helps to see im not as alone as i feel and others can relate to me sooo good luck ladies cant wait to hear what you are trying
