Default Implanon or Depo? Please help.

Hello everyone! I am 22 and was diagnosed with PCOS at 17. Since then, I have been using combined oral contraceptives in order to have a normal period, etc. Recently, I have been experienced highed than normal blood pressue. I am young and generally in good health, therefore my GYN believes the high blood pressue could be related to PCOS.

She says she would like to me to consider a progesterone only birth control method, since estrogen and high blood pressue may cause heart attack or stroke.

She offered me either Implanon or Depo but I have concerns about both. I read online that Implanon may induce mild insulin resistance which is a PCOS problem anyway. However, with Depo, it could take 9 to 10 months to return fertility once I am ready to concieve.

Has anyone tried either of these methods and experienced or did not experience these problems? Thanks for you help.

I've never heard of Implanon but I did take one dose of Depo after having my baby. I thought Depo was convenient because you don't need to remember to take a pill every day. You don't get your AF every month but I was used to that already because of the PCOS. My gyno gave me the Depo shot because of my high bp, but my GP couldn't understand why he didn't put me on Yasmin. She said that was the best bcp to take for PCOSers and it was okay if you had high bp to be on it too. My GP wasn't a big fan of Depo - she said that if taken for an extended period of time it causes calcium loss and will lead to Osteoperosis.

i'm also 22, and healthy. i've been on both.

I was on depo for 3 years, and was recommended to swich to implanon,
which I did. and HATE IT!

depo stopped periods, hardly any spotting at all. not sure about fertility after though, not really looking to conceive.

implanon, the first 6months went fine. after that everything month the periods get worse. started with light spotting for 2/3 days, next 4/5days little heavier.
now after having this for going on 10 months, I have continuous breast pain, and continuous bleeding. and are getting heavier everyday. and doesn't seem to be letting up. I bleed for 5 days then stopped for 3 and started right back up again and going on 7 days now.

LOVE DEPO. HATE IMPLANON.

I'm getting it removed shortly and going back to depo

Gosh I wouldn't advise you to try either for PCOS quite frankly. The least harmful and most easy to reverse way of trying a Progestogen only method would be to try a mini-pill such as Cerazette (Desogestrel 75mg), or one of the ones with norethisterone. I have read many reviews and experiences that have been negative, especially when women have PCOS.

I was on a mini-pill (Cerazette) and personally found it made my symptoms worse. But perhaps you should give it a try for 3-6 months and then ask to return to a combined pill. It could be just a blip with your bp at the moment. xx

I can't speak for Implanon, but depo IMO caused my PCOS or at least made it 100000x worse overnight in my twenties. I got fat, lost hair, got raging moods, lost my libido, and lost my circadian rhythm. Also lost my ovulation. It took 10 years to get most of that back, along with fertility drugs and IR drugs. I also bled for four months solid after my last shot. I had no symptoms before that shot and no family history so I do not draw good conclusions about it. I have also not met anyone on this board that was on depo and just went off it and got pg without serious help.

My RE doesn't recommend any progestin-only birth control, and depo also can induce IR. Studies show it also turns gestational diabetes into the real diabetes. It does cause osteoporosis, that is not a myth. It is no longer 'recommended' for teens because of that reason. I would not recommend just for birth control in a trillion years. Maybe for severe endometriosis people, but myself I'd rather have an ablation or hysterectomy than go through that again.

Why not try the mini-pill or the Mirena IUD? Both are almost immediately reversible, and the Mirena has a success rate at least that of the regular bcp. Or a lower estrogen pill? Mircette, the Ring, YAZ, and Loestrin 24 have almost half the blood levels of estrogen than old bcp, especially the Ring.

I have read that even with high bp you can safely take the combined pill Yasmin. The drosperinone is meant to be fine in that case. Maybe even Yaz since it should be less risky.

Also when have you had your blood pressure checked? Had you been stressed, recently in a rush or exercised? This can affect bp for a bit afterwards. Occasionally my bp has been higher than normal, but only if I just went to the gym (whoops lol) or I was having a major stress at the doctor for not helping me!!

I really wouldn't recommend depo if you want children. The POP/mini-pill would be best, and obviously the least androgenic, the better. Don't let them force you into having the depo shot or implanon. Remember the pressure that drug companies put on doctors. It's practically bribery! I know this because my fiance used to be a pharmacist. xx
