I was just diagnosed 1 month ago on Thursday. So I am new to the meds and the side effects are annoying. My condition in my opinion is twice as frustrating because I have two problems with the same symptoms. Along with the PCOS, I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Hypothyroisism (from the Hashimotos) and a Goiter (from the Hypo.).
My problems started when I was 8. I went from a skinny kid to a heavy kid over the summer and it just has gotten worse from there. Add to that Doctors that will listen to a blood test instead of me and how the meds are making me feel and it has been an infuriating 23 years.
Since I was 15 I only had one or two cycles a year if any at all. I haven't had one in a year and a half now. Been on met for a month and all I have gotten is extremely fatigued. I can take the met and within an hour I am ready for bed. I once had thick long hair, now it is thinning out so fast and not growing much at all. I also have the facial hair growth (and in other places) and the weight problems.
I finally found a doctor that will listen to me. SO that is definitely a positive step. And a good thing is he is just general practice but his wife is an OBGYN so he has run my case by her several times and she is helping him treat me. Two for the price of one! I figure at some point he will probably refer me to her for a direct consultation.
I am currently on Armour Tyroid (1.5 grams, up from 1 gram a month ago), Met (500mg twice a day, up from 500mg once a day a month ago), Vaniqa cream twice a day on the face (and it seems to be working for me - I know some don't like it and think it is a waste of money), and have started a 10 day cycle of progesterone to try to induce a cycle (on day 4 and no change yet).
I have slightly elevated/high cholesterol (just over 200) but DR doesn't know what is causing it because that is a generally a common issue with Thyroid related issues. My blood sugar is elevated one test but not the next so he is still watching that. I have excessive weight problems. My highest was 272 but I got down to 262 and stabilized there. Since starting all the meds I have only lost 3 lbs. My weight is all centrally located. My goal right now is 225. Ultimately I would like to get down to 190 (I am fairly muscular and athletic still even with the weight). In all honestly I have never found anything that really worked on the weight stuff except for Phen-Fin. Luckily I didn't get the leaky heart valve problems from that. I work out all the time and take long walks twice a day but still to no avail.
I have a little sister who at 25 started following in my footsteps. Unfortunately for her the thyroid stuff is 3 times as bad. Since I was diagnosed with PCOS she has talked to her doctor and on her next visit she is supposed to get tested.
I strongly believe is urging your family to get tested when you get diagnosed with something that is heriditary. When my thyroid problems started, all my sisters and my mom got tested. So far my mom and my little sister and myself are the only ones on medication, but our grandmother was on it too before she died. (note that tyroid problems typically do not surface til a woman is in her 40s or 50s). So with the PCOS now, I am urging them all to get tested just to be safe. I have even talked to my sisters about watching my nieces for symptoms as they grow older. I don't want any family member to have to go through what I have gone through the last 23 years. Just like with cancer - early detection can make a huge difference.
Glad I found this board. It really has been a help. Especially with the side effect problems! I didnt know why I was so tired and sleeping all the time. Now I know!
God bless all of y'all! Be Strong! And Live life to the fullest every day!
I can relate, especially to some of your symptoms. I can't tolerate met for some reason doc says it drops my blood sugar too low or something? So I look for other remedies. Well I wish you the best.

what is the differene between a "anovulatory cycle" and an "ovulatory cycle"
Is there such a difference?
I have only had one cycle a year at best since age 15 and no cycle for the last 18 months til yesterday but this cycle was induced by taking Prometrium.
