Default Increase In Blood Sugars

I am struggling to control my diabetes at the moment, I went to my GP on Monday because for sometime I have noticed an increasing need to drink more water / fruit juice. I was also going to the loo more as well.

My GP thinks it was related to my diabeties being uncontrolled and my last HBAC1 in September was reading 12.4. For this he decicded to increase my Glicizide to 90mg from 60mg. On top of this I am also taking Avandia 8mg and Metformin 2000mg.

My GP ordered some blood tests which I took yesterday including a Glucose test. I was expecting to go back for the results in a couple of weeks.

However my GP phoned me this morning which was a surprise as my Glucose came back at 24 and wants me to monitor my blood sugar closly. He also asked me if I was being sick, I said no which is not entirely true as I have been sick a few times but didn’t really make the connection.

I’ve just tested my blood sugar again after lunch and it was up to 27! It would seem it’s increasing despite taking the medications, I am beginning to think this is heading in the direction of Type 1 diabeties if I am unable to control it with tablets.

My BS reached 27 again today which in US terms is 468 .... that is despite not having fruit juice at all and just drinking plain water...

Yeah, juice has lots of sugar in it. If you are really craving it, look for a light version of it. It will have a lot less sugar in it.

What are you eating? I saw my doctor Wednesday and my sugars keep going up, too. He wants me to keep a food journal for a week and send it to him so he can help me figure out what I need to do differently. I told him I was confused about carbs and he said to forget total carbs and look first at sugar grams. For me, they should be no more than 3-5 per serving. After that, look at fat grams. I did have to confess my love of bread and that was when he asked me to keep the journal. www.fitday.com is a free site where you can enter what you eat each day and it will figure fat, carbs and protein for you. Doing something like that might help you and your doctor figure out why your sugars keep increasing if it's due to diet.

Thanks for the reply, it’s nice to see someone replied!

My Diet is not all bad, I've always drunk sugar free drinks and am careful with carbs apart from the odd take away. I've had trouble controlling my BS since I was diagnosed but rather than send me to the clinic here to get it controlled proper my GP has been playing medic by changing my meds!

Ended up in A&E today...

Well for 24 hours I have been suffering with a cold which has now turned into a chest infection. To top it off my blood sugar is way to high which I discovered in the middle of the week after my GP phoned me at home to tell me the result of my Glucose Test I took the day before. I saw my GP on Monday because I was so thirsty and I needed to use the loo a lot more, I didn’t think it was related to my diabetes.

So today I decided to try and get an appointment with the GP on call and I got a call back from a Nurse who didn’t ask if I had any other medical conditions. She told me to take paracetamol and drink lots of water – ideal if I was not throwing up everything I was trying to keep down. She said I could attend the Walk In NHS Centre and the Nurse there may give me antibiotics.

I decided to go as I think everyone knows there own body and I knew this chest infection was going to get worse not better and I was getting a tad worried I could not keep my blood sugar down, it reached 28! Dad drove me there and the Nurse there was wonderful, she told me I needed to attend A&E to see the GP on call and phoned through to say I was coming…

To cut a long story short, one chest x-ray later, some antibiotics, a shot of something to stop me being sick and my first ever shot of insulin! Blood Sugar is down a lot now and I have not been sick so managing to keep water down at least. They actually wanted to hospitalize me because I was showing Ketones in my pee which is not good for a diabetic. There was no way I was going to stay, I have no one to look after the dog! I have to now see my GP on Monday re the blood sugar as may need to go onto Insulin.

So that was Saturday….

Mazarin - Sorry to hear you've been not feeling well. But, I'm so glad that you're on the mend and that your BS are back down. I hope that your GP is able to help you find the right plan to keep them under control.

Feel better!

Your A1c is dangerously high!!! I would say it's time for a new doctor -- holy cow!!!!

Fruit juices shouldn't even be in your diet unless you find yourself hypoglycemic and need to save your life by a fast infusion of carbs.

How many carbs do you eat per meal and snack? Or has your doc talked at ALL about the need to keep carbs limited to control blood sugar? Many docs tell their patients to count "sugar" and don't bother telling them that CARB is another word for SUGAR....which is a deadly mistake.

If it isn't possible for you to find a new doctor (and I realize sometimes it truly just isn't possible) then please don't rely on the doc you do have for accurate information. Visit the American Diabetes Association's website and look through their information, visit their Type 2 Diabetes discussion board -- I didn't have insurance when I was dx'ed and had to take care of myself and that board was the #1 best place on the entire internet for diabetes.

PLEASE be careful! You have very dangerous numbers....I was in that range prior to being diagnosed and looking back on it now I should have been in the emergency room.

Thanks Sallie,

Sadly here in the UK Diabetes care is not the greatest. With those numbers I know I should be referred to the diabetic clinic but somehow I doubt it will happen. My GP just likes to keep giving me pills.

I have researched and learnt so much this past couple of days on this condition and there is so much that you are not told in the UK about this condition. I don’t blame my GP as he is restricted to the services he offers and I feel I have a good rapport with him.

Thanks for the website information, I will check that out, seems the people in the US are so much well up and educated on this condition!

I meant to say also Fruit Juice was my major downfall, I could drink a couple of cartons a day of that so it's no surprise now I had little control over this. I am swithcing to water and green tea's from now on!

One of my weaknesses was Mountain Dew....basically regular soda. I probably drank three to four 24oz Mt. Dews a day back in the day. When I was dx'ed with diabetes my blood sugars ranged in the mid-500's to ERROR on the home meter I used.

I had no insurance and had to really be my own medical team...so I really dug in and learned everything I could. I went to a low carb diet consisting of 30g carb per meal and 15g per snack, eating three meals and two snacks a day. I really had to work to up my fiber and protein intake as those were just as low as my carb intake was high!! But the more fiber and protein you take in the more it slows down the absorption rate of the carbs you take in.

Anyway....I won't babble on too much. Definately check out the ADA's T2 board...I still go there with every question I have -- even before I talk to my doctor!!

I checked out the board, it's really good lots more useful information than the UK version of Diabetes UK!

I have been so good day, counting carbs and threw away anything bad. It's hard at first and I know it will get easier but I want to see my HBAC1 down and in single figures next time!

I am giving myself about two weeks on this and if I see no improvement in my BG testing then I will head back to my doctor and DEMAND an overhaul of the meds and maybe insulin.

Are you on metformin?

Insulin is definately the best tool we have....and sometimes people use it for a while and then go back to pills once they get their numbers under control. I have a Type 1 cousin on the pump and she LOVES it!

But give yourself more like a month. A couple weeks SHOULD start to see some changes once you've buckled down....but a month would be more telling.

Remember, too, that ALL movement is excercise. When it comes to excercising to lower blood glucose it's cumulative and EVERYTHING counts. I can drop my numbers by 20 points just doing some housework! I've gotten into the habit of pacing when I talk on the phone -- I NEVER sit down when I talk on the phone. A good gab fest with a friend will see me putting an easy mile or two around the kitchen!

You CAN do it! If you haven't looked at food trackers yet, SparkPeople has a good system in place. That's a free site, too. You can track everything you eat or drink and tell it to count the carbs, calories, fat, whatever you want it to track it will. I don't always remember to use it, but when I've slacked off I ALWAYS use it to help me toe the line again.

There are a lot of good tools there, all in one place, for tracking food, cardio, weight training, as well as a lot of groups and things. I like reading the articles and research they dig up.
