Question Increased Hair Loss with Met

Has anyone else noticed that after they started Metformin (immediately after starting) the amount of hair lost has increased dramatically? I've had hair loss for a while, but since starting Met it is SO much more. When I wash my hair, I get two handfuls of hair. Then when I comb it, I clean the comb two times free of hair. It was never this much before. I'm really hoping it slows down.

Hi Carrie,

If you look under the met forum, you can find a lot of similar postings.

I took 1500mg of met for 3 months, and lost about 150 hairs a day, very similar to what you are experiencing. One of the possible side effects of met is that it can increase hair loss in women. One of the theories for this is that met can severely affect the absorption of b12 in your body, which can affect calcium and iron levels.

Within 2 weeks of stopping the met, my severe hair loss also stopped.

also, just to forewarn you, i went to 3 drs that told me that this was not a side effect of met...it was only when a fellow cyster posted a link that i faxed to my drs did they admit that this could be causing my hair loss.

I really don't want to stop taking Met. I'm only at 500mg right now, and I have to go up to 1500mg. Do you think with the increased dosage it will get worse? I take a prenatal vitamin daily, which has 12mcg Vitamin B12 (150% daily recommended value). Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your response.

I can't really say if it will get worse when you increase to 1500, but it did for me. i also started at 500.

I was able to stop taking met because i don't have a weight problem and i was not trying to conceive, so it was really just an extra treatment option for me, and not really something necessary.

one of the difficulties with met, from what i understand, is that it can permanently affect your body's ability to absord B12, so I actually take a tablet that is 8000% the Recommended daily dosage. i also take calcium and iron supplements.

you may want to ask around to some of the cysters in the met forum and see if any of them were able to continue taking met after it was making their hair fall out, and what their experiences were.

good luck

Hi

I get this too. I hate - hate - hate to wash/ brush my hair. I've been on Met about 2 maybe 3 years. I put all my loose hair into a little carrier bag, and totally block the sink!

Wow, I never thought of it being due to taking Met.
I've been on Met for a year or so now, and within that year I can actually see my scalp....28 years old and can see my scalp. When I put my hair in a pony tail I have to work some strands in the front to hide my scalp. All this within a year.
I don't take my B-complex regualarly like I should, so now I think it is due to the Metformin. I go back next month to the doctor. I don't have anymore refils left. I'm thinking bout trying the natural route, and seeing if the hairloss stops. I really praise Metformin. It has made me feel so much better. But I can't handle the hair loss.
It's a good idea to go check out the Met board on this issue....

Wow that makes alot of sense, I wonder if Met actually causes it? I've been taking Met since Oct. 2004, and I have noticed a big difference.
