Unhappy Increasing HCG/beta levels after miscarriage??

I got my BPF on June 9th, on June 22nd started spotting and by 24th bleeding heavily. Had internal ultrasound which showed no signs of gestation. Nurse done a pregnancy test which was positive and beta levels which were 132, exactly as they would have expected.

June 26th levels were 211, June 28th they were 286, July 1st they were 498. On July 1st I had another scan which again showed no signs of gestation but my lining was still approx 1cm and I had a 6cm cyst on my left ovary. This cyst wasn't picked up at the scan on 24th and I'd had a scan at the beginning of May as part of fertility investigations that showed that my ovaries were no longer enlarged and I had no cysts.

So now I'm in limbo, I've no idea what to think. Was I ever really pregnant or is my body playing tricks? Is the cyst causing my beta levels to increase? Why do I still have pregnancy symptoms?

Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Have your doctors looked into ectopic pregnancy as a possibility, since your betas are rising but there is no sign of gestation in the uterus? I hope its not ectopic, but you may want to ask your doctors about that becasue an ectopic can be serious if its not caught early enough.

Thank you for your replies

JustinsMama, I think that's what their main concern is but I don't have typical signs of ectopic. I have 24hr open access to the ward and have been advised to go straight in if I have any pain or concerns and they will admit me.

I just hope when I go in Sunday that I get some answers. At the minute I just feel like a medical freak

Briggy - with my 1st m/c my numbers kept going up as well. A few days after I started the m/c my levels were at 80. A few days later 160, then 350, then they kept going up every few days until they got to 1900. My m/c was sort of weird because I had one week of period like bleeding then no bleeding for a week then another week of period like bleeding then it stopped and my levels started to gradually go down. I never had any heavy bleeding and didn't pass any clots of any real size. It took 3 months though for my beta to get to 0.

I would be concerned about ectopic though because of that cyst. Please make sure you go straight to the hospital if you have any pain. I hope you get answers to. I am so sorry for your loss.

-Jennifer

Jennifer - I'm sorry that you have been through this too. Thank you for sharing your experience as it has made me feel a bit more "normal" about it all. I've been to hospital this morning for check up and more bloods which I should get the result of this afternoon and due to go back Tuesday and Thursday for further monitoring.

update - I'm now under the care of two consuntants as they are still baffled. Last beta/hcg were 954, but still nothing showing on scans. They decided yesterday that it has to be ectopic and laparotomy was planned for today and I was nil by mouth from midnight, but after lots of disscussion this morning we decided that the risk to my future fertility far outweighed the benefits of going ahead and possibly still not finding anything.
So I discharged myself today but there are keeping my bed so I'm an in patient that gets to go home.

I'm back in the morning to have my bloods done, have to wait in hospital for results (usually about three hours) and they will decide from there if I'm a good candidate for methotrexate. So looks like a fun weekend ahead. I just want to be out the other side of this with my fertility intact and to try again

Briggy-I'm sorry you are going through this. I feel your pain, my last 3 beta draws have shown my hcg levels are rising but much more slowly than they should. I'm basically stuck in limbo expecting to miscarry, but nothing has happened yet. It's definitely not ectopic for me because I do have a gestational sac/yolk sac in the uterus but this waiting and being in limbo is awful. ((Hugs)) to you. I hope you are able to get some resolution to this soon.

You could be to early to see anything and the cyst could be the one left over from Oing. I sure do hope that all is fine. I didnt see anything in the uterus until my beta was over 4000. Good luck.

Stacy--I am so sorry that you are going through this!

Briggy--I am so sorry that you are having to go through this also. It seems so cruel!
