Hi all,

I'm wondering if there is any such thing as an adoption counselor who is independent of adoption agencies.

What I'd like to do sit down with someone who knows the adoption landscape and can counsel us as to the best option for our lifestyle, beliefs, etc. I want this person to be independent of an agency and as free of bias as possible.

I'm fine with doing my own research, but I'm concerned that I might miss out on an opportunity that might be a good fit for us because either

1. I didn't happen to discover it on my own, or
2. The agency we choose doesn't cover it and might not want to send our business elsewhere

Has anyone out there used such a counselor? What was your experience?

Here I think they are called Social Workers and they do our homestudies...I dont know of anyone else that would do this type of thing .. new career ??

All I can suggest is to start doing research...do you want to do domestic or international adoption...that would be the first big step I would take and go from there depending on your choice...

I was going to say a SW too. Even if you aren't ready for a homestudy, you probably could get one to meet with you (though you may have to pay a small fee?). Good luck!

For me, the best thing was just talking to other people who have been through the different types of adoption. You might try bigger adoption forums like adoption.com
