Default Indian Cysters..what do you eat?

Although I have lived in USA for long, but I still love my 'desi' food. Everything I think of cooking/ eating I always think of either rice or 'roti'. I like my meat but not all the time. Sometimes I run out of ideas and end up eating the same things.

I thought it would be nice to share ideas about indian food we cook everyday and how we can make it more cyster friendly.

Thanks for the ideas felicity.

I do eat a lot of beans, and daal sometimes. I used to make a lot of burgers, grilled chicken with different spices at home when I was a SAHM, but now that I am working, it becomes difficult.

I do eat a lot of spinach. What is saibhaji called in English? . Do we get that at the supermarkets or at the Indian store?

*blush* Sorry to kind of highjack this thread but... >.>

I'm just desperate for a GOOD chicken tikka masala recipe that a silly, non-indian, yet desperate-for-chicken-tikka-masala american can cook. ^^;;;

If anyone can help me out, I'd LOVE to hear a PM from you!
Thanks!! *hugs*!!

hey everyone,

i am vegetarian, so wht i eat mostly is daal and Morningstar vegetarian "chicken" and other varieties.
For lunch its mostly a little rice with either daal or sabzi or homemade yogurt.
Dinner is low carb roti ( 7gms) with sabzi.
Ofcourse i also make idli, upma, etc for b'fast but those are weekend treats when i can spare more time.

i have tried to cut out rice as much as i can, but i cheat an awful lot.Its tough becoz thts been my staple diet for a long time.
Lets share some good health food recipies here ladies

all the best

Ajani,
Let me introduce you to these terms:

roti is basically an indian flat bread (looks a lot like tortillas, usually smaller and thinner)
daal looks more like a brown/ yellow curry. They are lentils boiled and blended and then spices are added to suite your taste. There are various varieties available toor daal, masoor daal, chana daal and many many others. They are high in protein and fiber.
'sabzi' in Hindi means vegetables. Normally made in 1000s of ways, the most common would be sauted vegetables with spices, eaten with rice or roti. Although my cousins was having it as a soup when she was low carbing!

As for the other stuff idli, hmm....let me call it rice cake normally the size of a cup cake..making it is a long prucedure, The easiest way to go about it is to go to the indian store and buy a ready mix packet for it. There are many brands available the most common one is GITS. costs $0.99c

Gerberas, how do you make low carb rotis? do you add soy flour in it? as for my rotis, I have stopped making rotis since the birth of ds, I make do with whole wheat tortillas. There are low carb ones available but I find them kindof expensive.and Rice is my weakness too.

Default Recipe

OK ladies, this is what I ate last night. Although it takes a while to make , I make enough for 2 days. I found this recipe on a brochure for the diabetics and made changes to suit my household.

lets call it Zee's PIE!

Saute lots of onions add some ginger-garlic paste, jalapeneos, lots of tomatoes and lots of mixed veggies out of a frozen packet.

Line the baking tray with slices of eggplant, pour the onion veggie mixture on it. I added some boiled chicken ( increase the protein) to it but you can leave it out if you are a veggie. Gave a layer of boiled/ mashed potatoes and mozarella cheese on it and baked it at 350 degrees for 20-25 mins.

You can make your own versions of it, vary the vegetables, vary the spices whatever suites your taste. (I used to skip the potatoes and use mashed/ boiled cauliflower instead when I was no carbing!)

Hey Indira, Welcome aboard. I just LOVE mexican food. We would love for you too to share some recipes.

I am basically looking for food that I can cook
1. without breaking the tightest budget ever
2. without making an extra dish for myself (dh infact needs high carb and high cal food..doesnt it happen always????)

hey ladies

zee, i dont make the low carb rotis, i buy them in walmart.its ususally present in same freezer as the cheese. They are actually tortillas but i call them rotis becoz they taste just like our homemade rotis.I am not sure of the price but i am sure its not expensive.I will tell u the exact name and price after walmarting this weekend

I think we can make good spicy food from grams.
I love to try Protein Dosa (Protein Pancakes) from a mixture of all handfuls of all kinds of grams - lentils, black gram, green gram, bengal gram.U can soak all these overnight and grind everything with some cut onion, ginger, green chilli and salt.
Heat a non-stick pan, spread the above batter n add a half spoon oil and keep turning it till looks done.
Serve with any kind of sidedish.

Its a very heavy meal and one is enough because of all the grams. High on protein and tastes yum.

Looking forward for more recipies

gerberas, I am going to try these this weekend, I already have some mint chutney in the freezer. Do you need to let it ferment?

We make a similar snack with just gram flour (besan). Batter of besan + water, and any spices you may want and make pancakes of the batter. I never reaslied that it is a cyster friendly food!! Thanks for opening my eyes!!!
