I just recently moved to Sudbury,ON and am looking for a new family physician. In doing so, NOBODY KNOWS WHAT PCOS IS! I had a doctor accuse me of lying and he yelled at me for being on the diabetic drug, Metformin. He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Insulin resistance and whatnot concerning PCOS.
Yeah I've been reading so many awful stories about uneducated doctors, and even my own family doctor with things unrelated to PCOS she'll just brush off... everything I say is never a concern... I'm in Ontario too and I read on another part of this website there are a couple good doctors in Toronto, maybe if you could travel down here it would be worth it?
I have been told that in the medical profession in school male doctors are taught that if a woman comes in with more than 3 symptoms, they are to consider her potential hypochondriac and that is why they start rx all the medicines. I was having so many symptoms in 2002 and I went to Dr. Brian Lo in Dana Point. Now, I will reveal his name because I do want the world to know he is the worst doctor in the world. He ran my blood and told me my thyroid was fine, my weight gain was because I didn't eat enough of the fiber he sold from his MLM company. I told him I had depression at the time (I had been laid off and my boyfriend at the time was a free loadin yogi) so he says my adrenals fine, thyroid fine, hormones fine and just prescribed me zoloft and accused me of eating too much. I was exersizing 20 hrs a week. He was a total ass. So I left and went to another doctor. Then I went for therapy because it must be me. I must be the problem right? My therapist refered me to a woman doctor who identified PCOS and my thyroid and said MD's MUST be conservative in their diagnosis because they can loose their license when it comes to hormones. She was going to go sloooow in testing and seeing if 30 grams of armor was enough after 6 months. Well, I finally went to my endo and I needed 75 grams and Met and Vita D and Iron. So let me tell ya, medical doctors don't do nearly enough, they just do eough to keep you coming back for that 75 consultation fee.
I feel your pain, my old docs were pretty crummy but once we moved I got really lucky and the first endo i went to was really awesome. I hope you can find a good doctor soon!
Most military doctors I've encountered have known very little about PCOS. They all acted like if I had no problem conceiving then I didn't need to be treated. Very annoying.
