DH and I are just beginning to think about adoption seriously, and I wondered how we were most likely to get a very young child. Since this is likely going to be my only shot at motherhood, I don't really want to miss anything in the child's life -- even a few months. DH isn't at all opposed to older children, but call me selfish if you want to -- I am. I really want a baby, and a very young baby at that. Is there any particular country or procedure to go through that would make you more likely to get a young child?

I think if you want a newborn, you really have to do a domestic adoption. Even if you get a referral of a baby just a few days old from another country (this used to be possible in Guatemala, not sure if it still is or not) by the time all is said and done, the baby will be at least a few months old before you get him or her. I know that in Colombia the youngest you can get is 3-4 months. That is going through a private orphanage. Going through the government child welfare agency, the average age of "infants" is 12-13 months. I believe that Russia, Ukraine, Kazahkstan and most other European countries require the child to be at least a year old before he or she is available to be adopted by foreigners. In China, correct me if I'm wrong Lisa, the average age of a baby coming home is 11-12 months. My research is a bit dated since we settled on Colombia back in 2002, but that's how I remember it.

The only way to adopt an infant is domestic & it could take a couple years to find a birthmother. I know there are some cysters that are doing private adoption & it's been a year w/ no end in sight.
China - The youngest I've heard of is 7 months but that's very, very rare.
China is the only country other than domestic that we researched on.

I think the Godparent Home in Lynchburg, VA adopts out newborns of pregnant teens that decide not to keep their babies. I might be wrong, but I recently saw a video on a channel out of Lynchburg and it had a series of placement ceremonies and some of the babies seemed to me to be newborns. Here is the link, and some info. I don't know all their regulations and such, but thought this might help
Thanks for the suggestion, and the link, Jashobeam!

My parents tried to go the state route over 15 years ago and were told it was a 7 year wait for a healthy newborn. I don't know the wait these days, but I've heard from others that a birthmother or private agency is more likely to allow you to adopt a newborn. DH's uncle and aunt adopted a newborn because they knew the birthmother. I think different areas have different laws on using a birthmother.
Locally we have a home for children with dissabilities. It seems there is a relatively short wait for children with certain dissabilities. I know this isn't for everyone, but thought I would bring it up, since some people don't know about this. Every Wednesday on our local news a "Wednesday's Child" is shown and info is given about how to adopt from that home.
