Woo hoo...he did reconsider. I sent him the links as well, but he said to stay on Met through the 1st trimester and then we'll discuss it more between now and then. I'm really so thrilled and far more relaxed now. Thanks for having this info available!

I am actually on 850mg of Met and my dr. doesn't know. ( I switched doctors and the new one doesn't know I'm on it )

I posted a topic over a week ago asking people how long they were going to be on the Met.

If some of you ladies could respond that would be great.

Are you going to be on Met for the entire pregnancy or go off it at a certain point?

Replys would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Wow, thanks for the info. I just got my BFP and I stopped my met a few weeks ago, mainly due to the side effects, my doc also said when I pg I would stop it anyway. But now I am really wondering what I should do. I will call again and talk to her. I am really feeling great not taking the met, I can actaully eat salad again as well as fruits and veggies, which when I was on it, totally turned me off and I ended up throwing up all the time.

I found out that I was pregnant last week, about four weeks, I stopped taking my metforming in January sometime because I did not feel that it was working for me. I was not ovulating on it and it did nothing for weight loss. I called my endo and she told me there was no reason that I should start to take it again, she didn't say anything about gestational diabetes. Should I be conserned about this, I am also very scared of m/c. Should I wait until I see an OB and ask them what they think or should I just stay off the metformin.

Hi, just to answer the question about length of taking met. I'm still on it at 15w. Next appt isn't until 3/16, I'll be 18w and we are going to rediscuss the met then. So far I've not had to fight for it, he's just asked if I'm still taking it, I say yes, he asks if I need a new prescription and I say no and he says we'll check in next time.

*BUMP*
I saw some more questions on this and thought it was great info my OB shared with me. I'll ask a mod about maybe making it a sticky again.

hello!!!!

My dr. put me on met as soon as he knew I was pregnant. I couldn't take it my first trimester, because I was too sick and couldn't eat. However, he was very insisitant that I would start it as soon as I can eat. Today is my third day!

I saw my RE today who strongly urged me to stop taking the Metformin. I was concerned about my PCOS and told her I'd read about Met being good for women in their first trimester but she said there were no studies to back this up. I don't want to go off the Met, and I doubt I will, at least for the next six weeks. She's referring me to another doc who specializes in my kind of high-risk pregnancy, I'm going to ask her what she thinks about using Met in the first trimester. I'm bringing these articles with me for sure!

Hi everyone, I am ecstatic to join this forum. BFP today 15 of december 2005. I was on metformin, but was taking it so erratically, I do not know if it is worth continuing it now. I stopped taking it last week because I thought it was making me nauseus however the nausea did not stop and i could not stomach swallowing the tablets. So I hope it is safe for me not to carry on with this medication. I will be glad for any answers.

Sharing my experience - I took Met from two months before I conceived my daughter, through my pregnancy, and for several months afterward while breastfeeding. She is a happy, healthy two year old now.

Questions - I am TTC again and want to go back on Met. Can I start it although there is a possibility I am pg now? And can I start it again while breastfeeding (the same child I nursed while taking it the first time - I'm wondering if starting Met could impact her blood sugar since I've been off of it for so long)?

Thanks for any responses.

Okay well I just called the Mother Risk hotline in Toronto, and I thought I'd post what they told me.

Starting during pregnancy - they said it is safe to start in the first trimester, according to studies which indicate no increased fetal deformities in women who take Met vs women who don't.

Breastfeeding - Met is present in breastmilk in very small quantities... less than 1% (I believe she said 0.28%). A drug is only considered a concern if it is present in quantities of over 10%. Bloodtests on nursing infants of mamas on Met showed very low to no detection of Met in their systems.

So I'm gonna start Met today.

Thanks for finding out this info and posting it here!

The pediatricians we interviewed all thought Met was safe to BF on.

I took Met till the 20-week point in this pregnancy. I wanted to stay on it, but my OB really wanted me to stop.

Xeri, I think its a Canadian thing. When I was PG, I was firm about staying on met. My doctor agreed that I could until the first trimester was up. After that, I brought her all these studies showing the benefits of staying on it and she said that A) she didn't think that there were enough studies because a lot of the ones that I brought were just articles referring to the same study over and over and B) even if there were a lot of studies, it's still rather new for use in PCOS and pregnancy and that there really wasn't any way of knowing if it might catch up to these kids as they age. No flames for me, thats just what she said. I went with her opinion and stopped taking it around 17 weeks. I should add that DS had a seizure when he was 9 days old and the pedi hinted that being on met while I was pregnant *could* have had something to do with it. I'll never really know and maybe he's just got his head up his butt....but it made me think twice about doing it again.

Hi everyone, I am pretty new to this site and I want to say that all of the articles and personal experiences have opened my eyes to the further benefits of Met during my pg. My R/E told me that there are no benefits after the first trimester. But now that I am back with my OB, I will discuss this with her at my next appointment. Thanks
