Points: 0 Bank: 0 Total Points: 0 | WOW. I was going to post a thread on here asking what the general feeling is about taking Met during pregnancy. I'm glad to see there's solid positive info about continued use. I do have a few questions though.
#1 - I'm currently on 1500mg daily, and I was wondering if I should keep on that dose or lower it
#2 - how long during pg should you take Met? I've seen conflicting reports about which trimester to stop
#3 - do we know if it has any adverse affects on the baby?
Thanks for all the info so far!!! You've really helped me. I hope you'll be able to answer these questions. They've been on my mind for a while. Thanks!!! | |

Most doctors will have you stay on your regular dosage if you're planning on carrying on with met. Its something to be discussed with your OB. #2 - how long during pg should you take Met? I've seen conflicting reports about which trimester to stop
Again, this is something that should be discussed with your doctor. I've seen a pretty even mixture of docs who want their patients to go off met at 13 weeks compared with those who would like them to stay on for the whole pregnancy. #3 - do we know if it has any adverse affects on the baby?
Metformin is a category B drug. This means that there aren't enough human studies to be sure that it wont cause harm to the baby but that animal studies indicate that it is likely safe. The debate lies in the possible long term effects. Because met hasn't been used in pregnancy until recently (in America, anyway), there isn't any long term follow up with these met babies. |

I haven't yet seen a dr, I have been sticking with my 850mg 2x daily. I also am printing the articles in hopes that I can take then to my DR and get his/her opinion. Unlike the rest of you all, I'm in a touch spot because I don't yet have a dr. DH and I are JUST getting insurance since our move.
Anyone else do the 850 2x during 1st trimester?

I think it has kept me from gaining a ton of weight in pregnancy and also getting GD. I don't want to go off of it but i think the dr is afraid the baby will be born with low blood sugar. I am seeing a diabetes specialist tuesday, will find out more then.

When I was pregnant with my son in 2002 many ladies were taking it through their pregnancies then and I haven't heard of one case of any problem. I wonder how many pregnant women on Met this board has seen since then - a lot I bet.

-rani | Rani, the minimum dose said to be effective in treating PCOS is 1500mg daily. Most doctors will start you off at a small dose and have you work your way up to that. Many cysters end up needing a higher dose though. You should definitely ask your doctor about increasing the dose. |

My Mood: Points: 705.62 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 705.62 | Metformin while preg I found out last thursday that I was 8 weeks preg. This is after 10 years of trying and after upping my dose of Met to 2000mg a day. I also lost 20 pounds. My dr wants me to stay on that dosage throughout my preg. I have a son that will be 14 when this baby is born. We are very happy and suprised.
