Hi ladies. I have been trying to conceive for 2 yrs. with no success finally my OB found my PCOS and started me on metformin 1000mg a day. My question is how long does it usually take to work. I have been on it for a week and I want to know when we should start trying? I have read it should work by 3mos. after first dose but unsure. I just want to make sure I am not wasting any more time on something that may not work.

It could take awhile to work. Some women see results immediately and some have to wait much longer. For me, it took a year to start ovulating and and another year after that to actually get pregnant. Also, it is said that the minimum dose of met to treat PCOS is 1500mg. Is your doctor planning on increasing your dosage? I didn't notice a difference at all until I moved up to 1500mg.

My doctor gave me 1,000mg a day because sometimes my blood sugar runs extremely low. She wants me to come back in 2mos. to see where we are. She had mentioned using clomid allong with the metformin if I do not ovulate, but wants met first. I just started missing my menses in fact I have had 2 boys already. I have never had PCOS and now all of a sudden I have it. One doctor (I have gotten a second and third oppinion) said he has many patients get the signs of PCOS after using the depo shot. Do you think that 1000mg dose is because of recently losing my menses? I have to say this site is amazing..... I have so many questions for my doctor she probably hates me, but I think it is important to be involved in your healthcare. I appreciate the response and I will run the 1500mg dose suggestion by her. THANKS SO MUCH

Fishiniki - I'm sure every doctor is different but my doctor started you on Clomid if you didn't ovulate on your own after 3 months on Met.

    Good Luck!

thanks for your replies, I have contacted my doctor's office and they told me if I want to be that agressive in trying clomid we can use it with the met.I go again in july, and my doctor wants to discuss it further with me but they said it is up to me. Hopefully I will be posting soon that I am pregnant.Children are the most rewarding things you can ever have, and I am just thankful that there's hope for me to have one more.

Met never worked for me in terms of ovulation and periods. It initially helped with weight loss which I have gained back. I have been on it for three years b/c it prevents diabetes, and I have it on both sides. I have read alot about met and preg. My RE told me to go off it, I choose to stay on it throughout my entire preg. I will not risk m/c or gestational diabetes. It's my body and my decision.

I started Met XR 500 2months ago. I started to eat healthy, exercise, and avoid stress. I lost 14 lbs. I took a pt this am and it was positive. Now I am 4wks pregnant.

I just posted a question about this on another board before I found this!!
I have just finished my first IVF and beta is tomorrow. I had several neg. tests before they turned positive 5 days ago, so I am sure tomorrows beta will be good! Anyway I take 2000 met XR daily at 7pm. My RE said I shouldn't be on more than 1000, my reg endo who is the one who put me on it before I even saw the RE said not to go off it and my ob says to do what the RE says. BUT....I am scared to go off it because of the mcing...Does 2000xr seem like to much for pregnancy??

Thanks for the information. My endocrinologist said to stay on the met but did offer the caution that it was not proven. I have been a little nervous however you all have calmed my fears.

I am on 1500mg of Met and both my OB and the RE said I should stay on it at least through the first trimester. It didn't do much for me though in the way of ovulation or weight loss (I lost maybe 5-7lbs but gained about 2 back). I've been taking it now since February. I think the combo of it with Clomid and the insulin resistance diet did help me to conceive.

Talking updates from the fishing gal

Golden jag omg I am so happy 4 you...That is great... I havn't updated you all and I am sorry,my doctor did go ahead and up me to 1700, but I was Oing and had af but not regularly on 1000mg. I have hade a great cycle (first time temper) I Od on cd 9 andI am now 11dpo. I had a realy high temp yesterday (I think it may be a triphastic chart) and on 8dpo I had a dip? But anyway I tested yesterday bc I couldn't wait any more and I got a faint line. ( don't get too excited bc I have had them b4 w/no pg, even at doctors office) but knowing I would test again no matter if it was + or- I have reserves so I am testing tomorrow with 1st morning urine. Long story short met has really helped me and I hope it helps you all too.

Our newest edition is due 10/9/07 thanks to clomid and met

I have a question about met. I have been on Met since February 2005. However, in the last several months I have been really bad about taking it. I coach volleyball so I am not home for dinner a lot (the team tends to eat out and I don't have my met with me). My question is this...I just found out a week ago that I am PG. My RE said to keep taking it. Well, if I wasn't really great about taking it before, should I start taking it or just forget about it. I go Monday for an u/s so I am going to ask him about it. But what do you think? I'm thinking that if I wasn't taking it when I got PG then it wasn't really doing anything to begin with, so why bother? I am not overweight or IR, so do I need to start taking it again? My RE also said to keep taking the baby asprin? What about that? Again, I am going to ask on Monday I just wanted some other opinions, too.

    Thanks!

Hi,i started taking met 1000 mg a day and i stopped taking my birth control pills and the first month i was pregnant and it was twins a boy and a girl. I took the met until i was 26 weeks pregnant i believe thats what kept me from miscarriage because i have had 2 miscarriages before i also believe the met gave me my beautiful twins Nathan and Chloe which by the way are almost 6 months old. So it truly does work for some people. Here's some pictures.

Erin- I would continue taking both. Even if the met didnt do much or nothing for you before- it could help prevent you from having a miscarriage. And I would stay on the baby asprin because if your dr put you on it you may have a problem with your blood. Of course you should ask your dr but I wouldnt stop the met. Just my opinion ...HTH
