Default Ingrown toenail

My daughter had an ingrown toenail removed on her big toe 5 days ago. They removed the whole nail. It is still draining pus and a bit of blood. She had taken 10 days of an antibiotic before it was removed. Has anyone had this done and could tell us if this is normal to still be draining? All we were told was to soak in warm water a couple of times a day and that it would heal on its own. It doesn't seem to be as swollen and as red as before so hopefully it is getting better. Any thoughts and suggestions would really be appreciated.

I have no idea if it's normal or not but I have a very painful ingrown toenail on my outside pinky toe. I have to rip it out every month and walk around in pain for about a week...only to have it come back in the next few weeks.

Is ripping the entire toenail off the only permanent solution? Sounds so painful. Ouch!

I have had several minor surgeries to remove ingrown toenails. I never had antibiotics before the procedure, only after. I also always had a drainage tube inserted that I kept in for a week. Perhaps your daughter needs to do another round of antibiotics?

Have the entire toenail removed really isn't that bad. I have had mine removed twice. They said it would never grow back (yeah right) and that a nice callous would form over it and it would hardly be noticeable. My nails always grew back, but it didn't hurt. The pain from the ingrown nail is far worse.

zoerba Sorry to hear you are suffering with your little toe. Hope it finally grows out and stops bothering you.

RobinC Hopefully she doesn't need anymore antibiotics. It isn't swollen and as red as before. My daughter would disagree that it was no big deal having it removed LOL I have never heard of a drain being put in for this but maybe its because yours was removed and wasn't suppose to grow back. My daughters wasn't permantely removed this time but was told if it ingrows again it would need to be. It will be 1 week tomorrow and seems to be feeling better. She says she feels a "stinging" occasionally but thats it. Not sure how long we are suppose to do the water soaks. Still wearing open toed shoes and prob will have to for awhile. Thankfully its warming up here in Canada and she didn't have this done back in the winter!

Thank you both for your replies

I had ingrown toenails removed off of both of my big toes when I was 12 years old. It took about two weeks to really heal. I could not even participate in gym class for the first week. I remember it being sore and draining - the signs you are saying [less swelling redness] are good. I would give it a little more time to see if it keeps healing on its own before I'd worry about it.

GL to your daughter - she'll be feeling relief soon!

I had had several removed by docs and I eventually just started doing it myself....ouch. I used to get them ALL THE TIME as a kid and teen up until my early 20's....what made it stop was getting my first pedicure...I don't know what that little chinese lady did, but it was gone for several years!!! Last year I got another one and took care of it early by cutting out the corner of the nail and cutting the rest of the nail straight across. A few weeks later I went and had a pedicure (not the same person)...and it still has not happend again. I think it is regularly cleaning out the dead skin that can build up under the sides of the nail that makes the difference.
