My fiance and I have been trying for 4 1/2 years to have our own child and haven't really tried any type of fertility medicines. We were wondering approximately how long it takes from start to when the child comes home. We thought of maybe adopting since we haven't had any of our own but we don't know alot about the requirements and such. Any help would be wonderful.
Thanks

Hi Joannes,
My husband and I adopted our beautiful baby girl in May. The time it takes to adopt really can vary. Are you thinking you want to adopt an infant domestically or are you considering adopting from abroad? Our timeline went like this... First Orientation with agency May 2005, Signed with agency June 2005, Homestudy July-October (It took longer because our social worker was out of town.) Matched with birthparents December 2005. Baby was born May 2006. Our agency said the average wait was about a year but they do have people that have waited longer and some that happen sooner. It also depends on the situations that you are willing to accept. I would suggest you find some local agencies and go to some orientations. Even if you decide to go through an attorney or maybe even social services you'd still be able to get some information that is geared toward your states laws also.
Good Luck! We couldn't be happier about our decision to adopt! She is our little angel for sure.

I agree that it varies with each adoption. Our agency told us that the typical wait for a newborn was 18 months. We were prepared to wait but amazingly, our wait was unbelievably short. Our paperwork was complete with the agency in early October of 2003 and I got "the call" on Thanksgiving Day, about 7 weeks later! Ds came home the very next day. Our situation was very unique, but when things are meant to be, they happen!
I would contact local agencies for information. They will be able to help you answer your questions too.

I'm in the process of adopting from the foster care system, and I'm happy to tell you about how it's been for us or answer any questions. I would think a big part of all adoption routes are the same.

Thank you all for your posts. They really have helped set my mind at ease a bit. I will contact some local agencies up here and find out what the time frames are like. Another quick question. Is it true that you have to be wealthy to adopte and does it cost thousands of dollars to adopt a child either from your own country or another? Thanks for your time and advice.

Hello Joannes, my husband and I are in the same vote you are in. We do not really know where to start. Keep in touch and let us know how things go. Best of luck. Auntieshortie
It depends on the route you go. Ours was a private adoption and we met the birth mother when she was very close to due date. We started the process right away after birth. The baby came home with us, then we had our home study, the birth mother signed her rights away 72 hours after birth (law in my state) and then the adoption process started. It takes 6 months till it's final in my state.

My dh and I adopted domestically through a wonderful agency that does open adoption throughout the U.S. We had a great experience and do know our son's birthmother which is absolutely amazing. I was apprehensive about open adoption until I learned more and now I just have the most amazing son and the most beautiful story I could have ever asked for. It's important to research the different types of adoption and I think talking to other APs is very helpful in learning what you can first hand. Once we decided on open adoption - we then researched different companies and did what was a good fit for us. Good luck!!
