Question insulin level is 26 glucose is 103 what does it all mean?

I have had PCOS for a long time. I have had three children ( two with fertility drugs) and was diagnosed after my second child was born. The docs put me on glucophage then after my third child was born took me off it. She stated i would get liver damage. I never had a problem with my sugars while i was taking it. Last week I had a fasting blood sugar and they came back with my insulin level being 26 and my glucose 103. My doc seems to be clueless . Can anyone tell me what this all means. Am I now diabetic? And shouldn't I be on glucophage? And has anyone ever heard of it causing liver damage? Help!!!!!

I am not sure if I have this exactly right, but I think I was told if Insulin is higher than 13, it's a signal for type II diabetes and that if your glucose is higher than 150, it means insulin resistance, but don't quote me on it. My insulin was 13 and glucose was 224 and I was told I was insulin resistant and boarderline type II diabetic. Hope I helped a little!!

Default ny new american diabetes association

numbers fasting glucose up to 125 is boarderline or prediabetes. I ran 125. Over 126 is diabetic. The fasting insulin, over 13 is Insulin resistance. Depending on your dr, some dr's will tell you over 30 means you're type two diabetic. I'm a 49.8. After the wacky test (original poster) you've had, they'll generally order a Oral Glucose tolerance test (where you drink a really sugary drink) and have a nother fasting test, and then blood draws every 30 minutes for the next 3 hours. Oh it's just such fun. I get my results of that this morning. The general consensus is I'm type two and insulin resistance, because of how my body responded to the test. Please see an endocrinologist.

And yes Glucophage/metformin CAN cause liver damage, you need to be supervised with blood tests.

Take care

Hi there-

I am wondering about IR and glucose tests. My fasting glucose test was healthy...about 83. After a day of random snacking recently, a friend who is type II took my sugar reading and it was 99.

I have no info on my insulin levels and am wondering if you can be IR even if glucose levels are good.

I feel REALLY yucky on protein diets (feel like a slug), but high GI foods like rice cakes make me ravenous.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks!

Miss Piggy

Miss Piggy ~ Yes, you can be IR but have totally normal glucose levels. My glucose levels are really good but my insulin level is high so I am IR. What happens is your body becomes less sensitive to insulin so your body produces more insulin to keep your glucose within normal levels. It's kind of a pre-pre-diabetic situation. With IR (if you have it), you may never become a type II diabetic but chances are much higher that you will. HTH .

Thank you so much for your help!

I need to watch it. I have (had) a great aunt on the maternal side who I suspect was an untreated PCOSer. She became TYPE II and suffered many of the debilitating effects of the disease at its worst. DO NOT want that to happen to me.

Thanks again!
