Mine were always borderline or normal. My Dr diagnosed me by symptoms and gacve me a trial of metformin. I'm glad he was that open-minded, because insulin lab tests can be really inexact.

My fasting insulin level was 13. That fell well within the lab's "normal" range, but I've read on PCOS and IR websites that anything over 10 should be considered IR. I had acanthosis nigricans under my arms, and that is a sure sign of IR.
What is acanthosis nigricans? I gues i could just research it....i think i need sleep!!!

Acanthosis nigricans is dark patches of velvety skin that are often at the neck, underarms, groin and elbows. Some people also have dark places under their breasts, around their waist or behind their knees.
My fasting insulin levels are normal, but my 1 hour and 2 hour levels after having the glucose drink are abnormal. I have heard that this can happen with IR. Also, diagnosing IR seems to depend on factors such as weight, age, ethicity etc., not a number alone - I looked on the internet and could not find any exact numbers as to what is 'normal' because of this.
When I was a teenager I had really bad acanthosis nigricans under my arms - I never wore anything sleeveless because of it!! I remember once at a swimming carnival for school when I was wearing bathers / swimmers, and a friend of mine commented that I was 'all brown' under my arms -I felt so embarrassed! But I have noticed that recently the dark patches are not as bad - almost disappeared - which I think is because of diet and exercise improvements over the past 2 years.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?
