Default Insulin Levels?

I just had PCOS bloodwork done and she said my hormones were OK, but my insulin was HIGH for my height / weight. Insulin in the 190's.

Can you tell me what that means? I'm 5'10 and around 195 lbs... I'm lost. She put me on 500mg of the Metformin and that's it.

HELP!

My fasting insulin level was at 49 and they freaked. Was this a fasting level? It lead to further testing and surprise surprise I'm type two diabetic. Did they do further testing?

from what i've been told it shouldn't be higher than 10, and it think a fasting level shouldn't be higher than 5 i have been getting around 16 (fasting) and my doc says its too high - and for me it IS rasing my hormonal levels.

are you talking about your blood glucose level? that would make more sense. if so, that is quite a high reading. and 500mg of met is only a "baby dose" to start out with. i started with 500mg the first week and then went up to 100mg by the second. and now two month later i went up to 1,500, but i'm supposed to be working it up to 2000 or 2500.

Ya, this sounds more like a glucose reading. If it is a fasting insulin, that is extremely high!

My MD also says fasting insulin should be less than 10 and from the research I've seen, it should ideally be 5 or less. In any case, you'll probably need to be on more than 500mg of Met to get results. Your MD probably plans to increase it once he sees how you tolerate the starting dose, but I would ask about it because research shows that 1500mg is usually the minimally effective dose.

Best of luck to you!

My insulin is about 27.1 and the grid on the blood work says 27 is the top of the normal range. (I just had to out do the norm!!) That high does sound off. I also read somewhere that measuring insulin can be tricky due to body weight and other factors. Anybody else heard of that?

Default dx with T2 Diabetes

Hello I was recently dx with T2 Diabetes. And am completely freeked out. I hate the thought of needles and do not want to ever have to give myself a shot. The first time I went in my fasting reading was 145, my doc ordered another test just to confirm and during this one-in a half week time between tests I did more exercising and diet control and my fasting test was at 93, he was impressed however the A1C test came back at 6.7 which for him confirmed that I am diabetic. Now what?? I am so scared, do not know what to eat, how much to eat. I feel like I am at the end of my rope down with PCOS and T2 Diabetes, not to mention High Cholestrol (the bad cholestorol level is high). And to top it all off I am only 30. My doctor wanted me to take the testing kit home, I asked what this was and he told me it is a kit with a needle where you prick your finger to test your sugar level, I immediatly declined this I FEAR NEEDLES, and then to prick myself before meals...this man is crazy!! Any suggestion on what I should do now? Diet advise. Oh my doc did put me on 500mg of Metformin and baby asprin for thinning my blood.

Corina you may want to go ahead and try the testing kit at home. The needles are very small and when you poke yourself you dont even see the needle part. Testing and watching your diet and sugar now may keeping you from becoming insulin dependant later on.
good luck..i test at home and it really isnt bad, i test more than what i really need to sometimes.

this probably won't help you any but-my fasting insulin was 49; was told normal is between 5-10. so that "confirmed" my docs thought that it was insulin resistance.my blood sugars are normal-and i have a heck of a time trying to explain to others that i am not diabetic.....that # does sound like your blood sugar level-

Corina,

Don't be frightened. I was dx with type 2 last year. I would recommend going to a diabetes teaching class. That information will help you tremendously. Also, the testing isn't bad. Don't be afraid. You don't even feel the needle. I don't like needles and I use it. The freestyle flash can test on your arm instead of the finger and you won't feel it at all on the arm.

There are books out there for type 2 and also you can go to the american diabetes association for more information, but I do recommend going to classes. Some insurances will help pay for it and it will be worth it. I have found that if I exercise daily that my sugar levels stay in normal ranges, too. Whatever you do, please start taking care of yourself as soon as possible. I hope this helps. Take care and good luck..

The doc might bump your dose up next visit. Some like to do it slowly.

Although i have found TONS and TONS of people who don't agree w/ me- i follow a low carb diet. Like less then 40 carbs/day. It works for me, keeps AF regular for the most part and i just feel better.
i had to work my way up to 2,000/mg day-i agree w/ sheila32-doc might bump it up...
