Default insulin numbers

my son (11 years old)and i both got b/w done... i have already been diagnosed with being pcos...borderline diabetic... so i am on met...

my son had b/w done the last time i got mine done which was a few eeks agon.. i was told by my dr that my levels were 5.4 which were in the normal range...

but then a different dr ordered my sons b/w and they said his was a 146... so i am not sure what that is... and they said that we should put him on met... to control it...

what are the differences in the numbers??2 different tests?

thanks

Jane,

Most likely your test was an HBA1c, which is a type of hemoglobin test that can give an average blood sugar over the past 3 months or so. You can multiply your number by 18 to convert it into the type of unit your son's fasting blood sugar was in (that's what his looks like, a regular blood glucose test). So your blood sugar estimate is about 97, compared to his 146. Normal fasting blood sugar is less than 100. Impaired glucose tolerance (what used to be called "prediabetes") is 100-125 (5.6-6.9 for HBA1c). Your son's reading puts him into the diabetic category. He really should have the test repeated, along with a glucose tolerance test, to get a clearer picture of his status before starting meds. It is unusual for a child his age to have type 2 diabetes, but it is becoming more common. The doc needs to find out if it is type 2 or type 1 though.

HTH,
Linda
