Default Insulin or oral meds

Does anyone know how a doctor decides if someone just rx'ed with typed 2 goes on insulin or oral meds. My husbands cousin and I were rx'ed at the sametime. His doctor put him right on insulin and mine put me on oral meds. I'm wondering what was so different in our diagnoses that made our treatment so differnet His A1C test was slightly higher than mine but that was about it. Any guesses????

I am not sure, I'm on both. My first endo started me out on met to begin with. Once I was able to tolerate it and it wasn't helping my bg levels, he added byetta and then he added insulin. I was recently told by a new Endo to get off byetta and stay on insulin and metformin. I'm sorry, I really don't have the answer...Let me know what you find out.

I did a little research tonight and I think I found the answer. I found a article that says "that it is common practice to try pills before insulin but you may start on insulin based on these factors.

How long you have had diabetes
How high your blood glucose level is
What other meds you take
Your overall health

Because diabetes pills seem to help your body use insulin better, some people take them along with insulin."

So I guess thats it. I was on meds for depression when I was rx. Doctor started me right on Glipized 5mg twice a day. I have been on them for over a year and my diabetes is totally in check.
