Default *Insulin Pump , Anyone?*

I thought I seen an old thread about getting/having an insulin pump but cannot find it. Anyhow, I am wondering if any cysters are using one to get better control of diabetes.

I am type 2 but recently found out I am expecting. Although we are not sure how this will turn out, my Dr. asked me to consider this because it offers the best control for diabetes, especially for pregnant diabetics.

He gave me tons of info on it and I meet with his educator on Wednesday. For some reason it seems intimidating to me but I do see where it can really help. It's like a portable pancreas. I am just wondering for those who use the pump, how has it worked for you. Would you recommend it.

I'm not on the pump. I only take insulin at night, but would love to be on the pump when I need insulin all day long. I have a cousin that is type 1 and he has the pump. He loves it.

I actually just got approved for it. That thing is expensive, almost 7000! but insurance approved most of it. It should be shipping out today.

I am a bit excited about it. From everything I have read about pumping, people really seem to like it. They get better control of their diabetes and it gives them freedom. My dh is not too excited about my having a device attached to me but I told (and showed it to him) him it was small and it can be removed easily when necessary.

Thanks for responding Fly!

I am currently a pharmacy student and I would recommend it to any of my patients who can get it. Pumps can change the way you live your life and can really get things undr control.

Also, since you are expecting you may have times where you eat more often than you give shots or may have nausea that prevents eating much at all. If you have already given your shot and cant eat you could be a risk for low blood sugar. But with the pump you can program for the daily adjustments to prevent highs and lows.

Pumps are pretty easy to program and not even noticable under clothes. I know a girl who hid hers under a form fitting wedding gown! If I ever become a diabetic I am going pump all the way. Good Luck!

Roxdoc2b-Thanks. What you wrote is exactly what happened last week. I was so sick and I ended up a few severe lows.

It shipped out yesterday so I am thinking it will come today because they put in a rush for it. I don't think I will have in place for Thanksgiving since I need to be trained on it.

Can you be on the pump when only on insulin at night?...I'm only on a 24 hr insulin. I give myself 20 units at night before bedtime. I do have highs and lows during the day, but apparently not bad enough to be put on insulin all day long. Thanks.

Actually, when you get on the pump, you stop the long acting insulin and are placed on only fast acting. It pumps it out in small amounts every so often (like every hour, 1/2 hour etc) and does what a pancreas would do (tries to).

I missed ups with it Wednesday and they didn't try to deliver today so not sure when it is coming.

Hi, I am new to this forum and also have PCOS (of course). I was diagnosed about two years ago by my Endocrinologist who was treating my type 2 diabetes. I treat my diabetes with insulin and have had a insulin pump for about two and half years now. I think that it has freed up alot of time for me, but after a while having something hanging on you all of the time can make you crazy. By the way, before the pump I was taking 5 injections per day. That was really hard for me since I have three children, a job and I was a full time student at the time, so the pump has definetly helped in that aspect. If you only take insulin once a day, then you may qualify for a pump, all you would do is break up your once a day dose into hourly doses. Insted for taking like Lantus at bedtime (24 hour insulin) then you would take Humalog or Novalog (rapid acting insulin) in the pump and it would give you a small hourly dose insted for a large dose once a day. That is called the "basal Rate". When you eat you "bolus" to cover the carbs you eat, and also enter your blood sugar. When you have a pump you have to check your blood sugar more ofter like 6-8 times per day. That was a big adjustment for me, but all in all I am thankful that I have my pump it has helped me stay healthy with my diabetes.
