Question Insulin resistance Dr will not do test ?

Hi fellow cysters, have been to see my DR to ask to be tested for insulin resistance, she has refused to do the test saying that as my glucose level 5.4 is normal, there's no need to do the test, but on researching this i have been left confused, just wondering if any of you know more on this subject.

love jayne

Hi Jayne
This is typical, unfortunately, I was not given a GTT and any connection with insulin was denied by every doctor until the last one. I was given Metformin and it is working, the problem is that I will never know if I am diabetic because there is no way of testing unless I come off the Met for a while, which I can't do as I am so ill when I don't take it. You will find that very few doctors will give you a GTT for some bizarre reason, but even if they did, they would either not know how to interpret the results correctly, or nothing would show up (especially as you have been low-carbing). There is a proportion of women with PCOS who always have completely normal blood results no matter what is wrong with them. I would say, as low-carbing is working for you (well done on the weightloss by the way) then you more than likely are inslin resistant. I don't know what your symptoms are or how severe they are, but it sounds like it might be an idea to find a new doctor and try and get Metformin. Good luck!

hi jayne the idea of doing insulin levels as well as glucose levels is that even though the glucose levels may be normal the insulin levels in some PCOS women may be raised indicating the production of too much insulin which in turn leads to long term complications. Detecting these mild changes can prevent you from deleloping diabetes later on in life. a very helpful book which explains PCOS in detail and the various blood tests taken is by COLETTE HARRIS AND DR ADAM CAREY- PCOS- A WOMANS GUIDE TO DEALING WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME best of luck! tinkerbell

Have got a copy of PCOS A WOMAN'S GUIDE TO DEALING WITH POLYCYSTIC OVERY SYNDROME
I have found it to be very helpful, it was reading this book that made me go back and see Dr in the first place, looks now like i will just have to wait to see Gyne.
