Default Insulin resistance & Type 2 diabetes - difference??

I was diagnosed with PCOS and insulin resistance about 2 or 3 years ago. I can't remember what the stats were on my tests, but my doc put me on 1500 mg metformin a day and I've been on that for about 2 years now.
I've been reading up about insulin-related conditions, and I can't seem to find out what the difference is between insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Can anyone explain it to me?? I know they must be two separate things cos everything I've read says that IR can lead to Type 2 diabetes if it's not controlled, but what's the difference between them?!

What is type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90 to 95 percent of diabetes cases. The body needs insulin - a hormone produced in the pancreas - to let blood sugar into cells for energy conversion or storage. When cells do not respond properly to insulin (insulin resistance) or the body does not produce enough insulin, sugar levels in the bloodstream rise, resulting in type 2 diabetes.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance, an underlying cause of type 2 diabetes, occurs when the body fails to respond properly to the insulin it already produces. People who are insulin resistant may have the ability to overcome the resistance by producing more insulin. However, if the body cannot produce sufficient amounts of insulin, sugar levels in the bloodstream rise and type 2 diabetes ultimately occurs.

In other words, IR becomes diabetes once it has progressed to the point of raising blood sugar levels.... at which time it becomes a more systemic disease causing more damage to the body.. Also, at present there is no cure for Diabetes T2, however, IR is totally reversable if treated properly. Hope this helps Starr

Very good explanation, sweeterthenmost. I would like to add that I am the poster child of what happens when IR goes undiagnosed and therefore untreated. I was diagnosed as a diabetic in March 2000. I look back now and realize I was IR through most of my 20's and never even knew. I like to think of IR as "borderline" diabetic.
