Hi! I just entered this web-page and have seen your message. You seem quite experienced in handling PCOs, so any advice would be helpful.
I am 33,5 years old, diagnosed for PCOs in 1991. Symptoms: irregular period, acne, unovulation. I am slim (52kg) and I am wondering wheather this information I read about metformin would be useful for me.
My medication history is as follows:
- 1993 till 1997: BCP (Gynofen, with anti-androgen): helped a lot in restoring my circles, and acne dissaperred.
- 6 months quit medication: acne reappeared worse, no periods
- 1998: again on BCP: circle restored, acne dissapeared
- 2004: change to new generation BCP (Meliane: very low dosage, no anti-adrogen), no changes, period ok, no acne.

Since I am now almost 34 I am starting worrying on how and when I am going to go out of BCP since I want to have family one day. I am wondering:
- how successful would be my change from BCP to Metformin,
- Am I going to have my periods regulated as now that I take BCP?
- Am I going to have again acne problems after quiting BCP and taking metformin?
- Will I have any chances of getting pregnant using Met?

I would appreciate your response to my questions, in case you have some good tips and suggestions.

Thank u sooo sooo much!!! :-)

Hi everyone....
Sorry spunky, I am not on that kind of dose, but it is one of the higher ones I have seen so far, so I am not sure what your question really is =/....as for Dee01832, the first few days up to a week I had REALLY bad stomach upset with metformin, but it will wear off when you get used to it. My reccomendation for the stomach upset is to eat a good, balanced meal when it is time to take metformin (a simple salad won't cut it, it made stomach upset worse for me). The first couple of days also i was EXHAUSTED (partially because I was in the bathroom half the time, urgh) but that wore off too---if you are still tired, MAKE SURE you tell your doc just to double check. Also, if your stomach is still churning after a few days, tell your doc about it; they might recommend a slower release (I take fortamet, which is a slow release version of metformin, it works WONDERS for me).
Good luck and let me know how it goes!
-Hara

I have been on Met almost 3 months, and have not experienced much change. I plan to stick it out for the long run, as I would truly like to conceive in the next few years.

I have the worst carb cravings, and was really battling with them so I went on Fat Blaster ( which my doc said was ok short term) So far they have helped with the cravings and my diet is better controlled. I still have a dramatically fluctuating weight - it goes up and down 3-5kgs a week- but never goes over a certain point. My partner has been very supportive, and has joined the same diet plan to make it a little easier.

At present I am only on 1000 mg per day of met, and curious how long I should stick at the dosage and see if it works? I have noticed that alot of women on here are on much higher doses. I have not had menses on my own since I started the met, and before that I had 2 in a row and none prior for almost a year. I don't have too much trouble with side effects, in fact I have found the opposite to most women. The met actually helps as I always felt constipated before.

Thanks for the helpful info

Loz

I just started 500mg of Met this morning. I also started a GI Diet as well. I was told by my doctor that if I eat anything with sugar or high carbs that I might get sick with Met. Even if that doesn't happen I am telling myself it will happen so I can stick to lower GI foods.

i've lost 20lbs since january on met 500mg once a day until last thursday. i upped doubled my own dosage without direction from my doctor .. i am a nurse so i'm intune with my body... lol but ooooopsss i started feeling pain in the kidney area so i dropped down to 750mg and right now that seems to be the trick ... however i do plan on going up to 1500mg a day so until then i will up the dosage by 250mg until then... Also i've been doing South Beach phase 1 and moderately having a small snack here and there when sweets are brought into the office. lol ... But Dont give up ..

I feel better for reading this and it's certainly the best explanation of IR I've seen so far!! Many thanks!!

I'm also on Met and following a low GI diet. No weight loss as yet but it's pretty early days.

I was interested to read some girls had also experienced dizzyness and feeling lightheaded, maybe it is the Met, I wasn't sure what was going on, hope that doesn't last long!

The sugar cravings though whoooaahh they are FULL ON!!!!!!

Thanks for posting this VERY informative article; especially for a newbie like me LOL
I'm still waiting (after 9 days) for my IR results but this made me understand IR & met usage so much better than I did before!!
