| Registered User | Hello anyone in met: After four years not coming to my previous gyn office because the change of medical coverage, last year I returned to my previous gyn office for a regular check up. She was very happy to see me but very concern about the excess of facial hair, my weight and no having regular menses. She send me to visit the endo to see if I was a candidate for metformin. I visited the endo and after a week a return to find out that I was IR, but he did not prescribe metformin cause I was not planning to become pregnant. I was disappointed with his decision so he decided to prescribe spironolactone, which I have took before, to stop the growth of facial hair and did not like the side effects of it. I did work but I was afraid of the combination of provera & spironolactone. Last month I visited my gyn for an annual check up. She is very concern because since last year I have gain 24 pounds and my hair has not disappear. My gyn hope that the new endo will be able to prescribe met if im still IR. I don't know if I have to keep taking provera to have my regular menses. I need the opinion of someone out there who my have take both medications. I'm also tired of struggling with my weight, mood swings, lack of interest in sex and social activities. Thanks Yadira 37 years old no children birth control pills in the past clomid diagnosed with pcos since age 20 leep procedure 4 years ago Last edited by yadnie68 : 05-05-2005 at 01:27 AM. |

| Doing ok Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Missouri ![]() | I'm dealing with the same thing hun. I'm on both met and provera, because of IR and my mensus doesn't stop on it's own. I had one that lasted from last August til Feb when I had a D&C done, and started the provera and met togather in April. I'm still kind of waiting for by cycles to get balanced out here. I've noticed that most of the women here are getting bumped to higher doses of met after a few weeks, but he has me stuck on 500mg of the extended release. So the spiro does wk? I have quite the beard! I feel for you hun...and anyone who goes through all of this.

| Registered User | Hi guys....ahem...or gals rather.... I just started taking met. I asked the doc to give it to me and she did. Nothing was said about low carbing... I usually eat like once a day, twice at the most. I was just told to eat and don't skip anymeals. I don't have the yucky bathroom thingy side effect, but I am nausiated and have cotton mouth really bad, and i will get really sleepy...then ok for an hour and really sleepy again. Also, it's hard for me to eat breakfast, usually just eat dinner but i have been eating with my pills, 500mg in morning and 500mg at night, but because i feel bad i am trying to eat inbetween....and that makes me feel like $#!% because i'm not used to it... Do you girls have these side effects? Doc said she will increse my dosage if i'm doing ok on this amount...I think i am, but is my sugar getting to low? Is that the cotton mouth? Also, like an hour or two after my first pill my ovaries started hurting....good sign i hope. I havent seen af in two - 3 yrs....even longer before that...any suggestions on how to get rid of the cotton mouth...that's my biggest annoyance, lol, i'm such a wus... But on the plus side this is my 3rd day on it and i love my husband more now...lol..i have been getting so mean lately....maybe now he'll find out what love really is...haha.. ok....gonna quit now... Thanks... MaryJean |

| Registered User | I was diagnosed in 2000, after many visits to several doctors they discovered I had endometriosis and polyps. I had an operation in January of this year and after speaking with several doctors and much research I truly thought metformin would help me.ffice:office" /> I have been on Metformin for 2 and half months, with a low carb diet and have not seen any results. I realize it is not a miracle drug, but after reviewing other’s statements I am surprised that I have yet to lose anything. I walk 10-15 miles per day and have kicked it up a notch by including Pilates 2 to 3x per week. Does anyone know how long it takes for you to truly see and feel the difference? I am becoming very depressed as I watch myself balloon into a totally different person. I have gained 60 pounds in the past few years and nothing seem to help. In need of some good advice… |

| Registered User | just wanted to say that what a wealth of information you all are sharing. my name is tiffany and i have been pre- diagnosed with pcos from the time i never hit puberty. has surgery when i was 15 yrs old (im not 35) and was diagnosed then as for sure having pcos and that i would never be able to have children. no one in my family has this disease and i am a big boned girl and as a kid weighed 175. in my teenage years i was put on birth control to make me have a period, that worked for a while until i got married and wanted to have children. i was always active and big boned but still in my weight range as a kid. after fertility drugs and no periods i gave up hope of ever having my own biological and adopted (have 2 wonderful daughters who are now 14, 12.5) with years of no periods, literally lucky if i had one in 4 yrs, out of the blue i get pregnant......without a period, drs where shocked and told me there was no way this could happen, well hello, it did, and it did it 2 times for i now have 2 biological children....which i am so thankful for........(6 and 3 yrs old now) as i have gone through life i have gained wieght and never have i taken any off. 20 pounds here and there, ive done every diet known to man and never loose a thing....with the pregnancy of my last child, i gained 73 pounds and have yet to loose it. my ogbyn knew nothing about glucophage and pcos, i found out on the internet by a friend who has pcos and who has lost 75 pounds by taking this drug.........i was shocked........i immediatly called my dr and got into see them and they started me on it, ive been on it 17 weeks, first 12 weeks was 500 mg, last 3 weeks 1,000 mg a day and ive not lost a single pound........im not over eating, ive cut out all candy, and im eating only 2 meals a day (hate breakfast.) how long does it take to start loosing the weight? help twigs |

Since Insulin Resistance goes hand in hand with PCOS, the Insulin Resistance Diet works for many. It is written by Hart and Grossman and it is excellent. You can still eat a lot of the food that you want - you just need to balance the carbs with the protein. It helped me to lose 33 lbs. Good luck! Kate |

| Registered User | HI everyone, I'm brand new to the site and would love to know was is the difference with Metformin and Metformin XR and please tell me what is the IR diet, I'm assuming Insulin Resistance diet? Is that the name of the book? I'm looking for definate answers. I was dx'd 14 years ago and have struggled with several problems with my PCOS, infertility, obesity (I hate that word) and facial hair, and acne. . Also did anyone who had a tubal ligation start having a regular period. I never had a period except maybe once a year unless on medication (provera) or other fertility drugs. Once we had our miracle babies I had my tubes tied and ever since then I have had a period, a heavy heavy double protected period lasting for 10+ days. Anyone else have that problem??? I'd love any advice. I have a script for Metformin but was told to start at 1500 mg |

Girl, you are the main educator in my life with this PCOS. My Infertility Doc. was so impressed with my "research" - and frankly, it was YOU. I have learned so much from this site, and I tell people, that comment on all my weight loss, that "knowledge is bliss"! I rave about you and this site. Just wanted to say, "Thank You". -Molly - Dayton, Ohio

Also could you tell me what is the IR diet. If it can help me I want to try it. You see I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago. I dont know what to do. I do understand that I need to loose weight but it is extremely hard for me to lose weight because of my PCOS. I have joined LA weight loss but i am begining to think they realy dont care about me. I have also joined the GYM where I work out for and hour on a treadmill 6 sometime 7 days a week. I am scared of diabetes and heart disease. Any advice would be welcomed because at this point I am ready to consider bariatric surgery. |
